"I don't like seeing you this way." Derrick spoke his mind when he found Sammi soon enough at the Student Union center. Actually, he caught eye of her coming out of the Catholic college outreach house, but he'd caught up to her in the building by the waterfall on the second floor. She was looking out a huge glassed in area. It looked as if she might have been complicating suicide. Just what he needed.
"Well, I don't want to talk to you." She pouted.
"Fine." He could look just as grim. Sometimes, he enjoyed these little arguments they had, but she hadn't argued last night. It was quiet then as he watched her look out at the sidewalk down below. "I just...thought..things had changed..you know."
She closed her eyes then as if he might disappear. Instead, he got closer.
"Come on." He tried not to beg. Maybe he did. "Lets just go for a drive. You and me. Sort this out. Its not the end of the word." Far from it, he thought. It was the beginning. He looked at it that way. Of course, it was a long time coming. But he'd wanted this, long before..before Natalie came along. She was just there. Something playful and unexpected. But she wasn't Sammi...and Sammi wasn't Caitlin. And he knew how he'd let that slip through his fingers. He hadn't been paying attention. That's all. But..but this was something to nurture. He'd learned from his mistakes..hadn't he?
She shook her head, no.
"You know, you want too." He had to change her mind, some how. "You..want me.." He let a smile slip. He hadn't meant to be so conceited. "God, do you know how long..I've waited for this. This is ..IS..." He wanted to scream, but he couldn't let himself. "I want this to work. And it can. If you let it." He sighed. He was so sad now. Not a thought of Natalie in his head. It didn't even bother him that she might wonder where he was or what he was doing. Derrick turned away.
"Wait." He thought he heard Sammi say. He pressed his lips tight and looked back.
"Don't go." She finally looked up at him. He took her hand. There was no time to waste. They had to go now. No way, did he want her to change her mind.
