Sammi was just curious about all this. Alex having a roommate.
"Well, I wouldn't exactly call him a roommate." Smed almost winked. He was cutting up onion for something. One of his specialties, she guessed. He was making something with ground meat and noodles. But it looked more complex than hamburger helper because egg plant was involved too, as well as mushrooms.
"Why can't I call him a roommate?" Sammi's arms were crossed as she watched. She wouldn't help. Besides, wasn't this meal in her honor. She would be leaving tomorrow.
"Fine, Alex's roommate." It was as if Smed knew something that she didn't.
"What's that suppose to mean?" She glared.
"Whatever you want it to mean." He blinked tears, but they weren't the emotional kind. Just misery in the kitchen.
"I don't really, care, you know." Sammi confessed.
"That's good to know." Smed made a mess on the counter, but he soon swooped the scraps of the vegetables in the trash next to him. He chopped at the onions and tossed them in the skillet where they sizzled with the ground meat.
"When is Megan moving out?" Sammi said it as if it were far away. It might as well have been. It was to an upscale neighborhood. She was house-sitting for the woman she worked for. Actually, Megan would be watching Paul while his mother was on vacation in the Virgin Islands.
"Tomorrow." Smed nodded as he scooted the onions in the pan with a metal spatula and put in the egg plant and fresh mushrooms next.
"What will you do with yourself now?" Sammi slightly flirted.
"I'll be seeing her. Its not like she's going to Siberia." Smed smirked. He opened some cans of tomato sauce and put in some Italian seasonings.
Sammi didn't know what to do with herself. Maybe read a book. She's started out with Pride and Prejudice and ended up with an easy yet compelling read, S.E. Hinton's That was then This is now. How had she not read this before? Of course, she kept thinking of Smed and Zeke while she read this. They could very well play the characters in her head. Funny, she hadn't thought Derrick at all, and she felt a little bad about that. He was her boyfriend, wasn't he?
Just then the basement door opened, and there was Alex and his roommate. Sammi's face soured a little more when she saw Logan standing next to him.
