Caitlin felt a little weird. After all, she was wearing Noel's gray cardigan, and it smelled of a spicy musk cologne that she couldn't remember the name of. Megan's old boyfriend. That's who she thought of. Never in a million years would she think she might sense it, again. Usually, she didn't think of scents like this. She'd never thought of the cologne that Zeke wore. He smelled like chicken pot pie. There was something of a comfort about that, but now she felt as if she'd possibly gone off the deep end, listening to Noel most of the evening.
Really, she didn't say a lot. Noel wasn't exactly discussing what she thought he might talk about. Logan. No, it was all about Noel. How he was a good listener. And why hadn't he found someone yet. Why?
They'd strolled through the park at first. Then ended up at Wal-Mart to buy nothing. It was an odd adventure. Finally, they'd ended up at some all night diner and had the breakfast of champions which meant a lot of bacon, eggs and of course, pancakes. She was eating all the things she'd avoided for weeks now. Eventually, they ended up at Noel's tiny little place and Noel kept talking about all the girls he'd ever gone out with.
"You'd think I would have been happy with her, you know. She was a cheerleader." This was someone back in high school, he spoke of. But then he mentioned a fat girl he remembered. And he started crying. "I liked her, you know, she was like the best thing in my Government class. But, I never talked her, outside of class. I didn't want anyone to know that I liked her." Now he put himself on a guilt trip. "Just how..how am I like this?"
Off course, Noel never came to any conclusions..instead he'd dropped off asleep in Caitlin's lap. Her cell went off. She felt bad she hadn't called Zeke. She wanted to, but never had a chance. Maybe she did, but she just hadn't taken it.
"Where the hell are you?" It was Megan.
Caitlin looked down at her predicament. It looked worse than it seemed. "I'm with Noel." She got out from under him and shook her legs awake. "I'm coming home right now."
"What are you doing with him?" Megan wanted to know.
"Just..just talking." Caitlin would leave it at that. "I'm on my way home now."
"Its pouring like crazy out. Didn't you hear the hail?" Megan reminded her.
"Great. Just great." Caitlin felt strange now. What was she to do?
"Look, Zeke is right here. He'll drive over and get you." Megan told her.
"What's Zeke, doing with you?" Caitlin winced. He was suppose to be home, asleep. But then, that was where she was suppose to be. A part of her would rather walk home in the rain instead of facing Zeke.
