Noel kept hoping to hear from Caitlin. He'd called a few times in the last week. Then he'd text. He felt as if she were this life-line he needed to be anchored too.
Seriously, he thought they'd had a connection that night they spent together. It wasn't like a one night stand. Really, he needed a friend and he hadn't had a friend like that in a long time.
He tried to accept the fact that he could hang out with the dudes he knew for the 4th, but it was all one lazy party of drinking. And it depressed him even more. Sure they knew him and talked the talk about how their lives were suppose to be and how well they were doing. After awhile, Noel shut down and ended up back home staring at some info commercial until the wee hours of the morning.
So the next morning after classes, he decided to check out where Logan worked at the zoo.
"What are you doing?" Logan definitely wasn't in a good mood to see him. "Spying on me?"
"No." Noel winced back as if he guessed it was a bad idea, after all. It wasn't like they'd talked since their fight. He thought it would be a good idea to meet in public..that way, they might behave themselves. "How's it going?" A huge crowd of kids were little animals wanting their treats from Logan. It was hot and humid too, near the bridge where the ducks quacked. Noel knew he wouldn't want to be standing where Logan worked.
"Its going." Logan was a bit sullen and kept busy with getting the treats out to the kids. Even Noel bought some frozen lemonade from him.
"Did you have a good 4th?" He sounded as if he might report back to Mom. Logan just nodded. Noel fidgeted then. "Look, I'll take you out to eat."
"I can't." Logan stayed indifferent as he made change for big bills. Noel nursed the inside of his cheek thinking what to do. Just then he saw a girl with the brightest red hair. He couldn't take his eyes off her. Perhaps he looked stupid, but he couldn't help but stare.
She was in a zoo uniform like Logan, khaki shorts and a blue polo shirt with the zoo logo. He watched them chat about something zoo related. Finally Logan looked at Noel.
"Um, Randi, do you want to go out with my brother and me? To dinner?" Logan looked at her point blank as if he was ready for her throw a dart right between his eyes. "That's him." He then pointed to Noel. Randi put her hands on her hips and pursed her lips, making a duckie lip, as she looked him over.
"I guess so." She sighed.
"Great," Logan smiled. "Then you can meet my boyfriend."
Noel almost choked. Of course, this would be about Logan and his boyfriend. Noel dug into his frozen lemonade wishing it would melt some.
