"Randi's adorable." Noel's mother told him when they were alone, "But, I hope you are taking your time. I really hope you two get to know each other."
"Yeah, of course." Noel knew what his mother was talking about. "I don't see us rushing into anything." He promised.
"Do you know, what kind of relationships she's been in, before?" His mother looked at him as if it might be the final Jeopardy question.
Noel choked on the question. They'd never really talked about the subject.
"She might not have ever had anyone who ..who treated her right. Are you respecting her, Noel?" His mom was getting to the nitty gritty and he really didn't like it. How could she question him like this?
"I know you always wanted a certain kind of girl. She had to be practically a super model. Remember? Well, Randi is sweet, and so tiny. But she's not going to be tiny, for long. Are you sure you'll be all right with the baby fat?" She was concerned. "Honestly, I'll confess, I was always worried you were the gay one..because you had such high standards. Its kind of nice to see you with someone quirky as Randi."
Noel kind of smiled as he listened to his mother talk about him as if he were some other kid she had. But he couldn't help but wince. He never thought he was that awful.
