"Seriously, this is not your problem. It isn't." Natalie was trying to be on Smed's side. Not that she was trying to bring Megan down and make her look bad, but she didn't want him stressing over the babysitting situation.
"I know. I don't want to worry, but I do. I like Paul. I want him to be OK. And, and Alfie is going to try." Smed met her for lunch. They still had a few days to themselves before school was back in session.
"Alfie?" She could only hope they found the real deal soon for this Paul. She was beginning to think Alfie might be good for nothing. "Is he doing anything there? Has he even washed a dish?" Natalie noticed he really liked to play video games. It was like he was avoiding something, but she didn't know what.
"I guess." Smed shrugged as he bit into another fry.
"Well, maybe Alfie will be OK." Natalie hoped. Only she wasn't banking on it. She guessed he was depressed, but Alfie was so good at hiding it, or maybe he wasn't. She nursed her iced tea. They were quiet for some time, as she wondered how she could talk about Megan.
"I guess Megan must be excited about her move. Where are they moving to, again?" She knew she shouldn't ask, but maybe she was glad Megan was out of the picture. She didn't want to think it, but it was true.
"Tokyo, she's saying now." Smed seemed indifferent about it. Like he'd never want to live there. He took another sip of lemonade.
"Wow." Natalie still couldn't get over it. "Unbelievable." She smiled.
"Yeah, who knows how long it will last." He smirked.
"You mean their marriage?" Natalie winced.
"No, Derrick having this job." Smed sighed, as if he doubted Derrick could keep it.
