Smed thought it was just a dream now. He was in the middle of sleep when his phone rang. He'd answered it on impulse. Maybe he'd talked in his sleep. He thought it was Megan. He guessed it was. Even so, he didn't sound like himself when they talked.
When he awoke, his cell was clutched in his hands next to his chest.
God, he hoped he didn't tell her anything about Caitlin. He was wide awake then. Bitter too. He called right back.
"What did I say?" He wanted to know. She picked up on the first ring.
"Nothing." She told him. He wanted to believe her.
"You really have to stop calling me. Everything is fine here." He told her.
"Oh really?" Megan pondered on her end as if she were in the middle of something. "Have you even seen Zeke?"
"Not yet." He'd been putting it off. There had been that hug when he left. But Smed could hardly look at him. Yes, he felt guilty, yet numb. Wasn't like it was a full blown sex night with Caitlin. Yes, they'd kissed, a lot longer than he ever thought possible, but when the touching happened..he knew he wasn't going to let it happen.
"You need to be there for him." She informed him.
"Do you just make phone calls to everyone, like this?" He rolled his eyes as if he could see her opening a business into confiding in others when things were broken in relationships.
"I don't know what you mean?" Now she was being fickle.
"I'm worried about you." He smirked with delight then, giving her something to worry that he was worried about her.
"I can't believe you." Enough said, but he was pretty sure she'd be thinking about what he said for the rest of the day.
