Smed still felt lousy. Especially, the way he left things with Natalie. Possibly, she'd never forgive him. He didn't deserve it, anyway.
Maybe he was depressed. Why did he do the things he did?
He really didn't have a lot of time to think about it. He was still trying to make up for lost time at work. The whole Sammi situation took a toll on him. Lots of sleepless nights. Then all the extra hours.
He honestly didn't have a lot of time to himself, lately. If he wasn't at work, he was spending time with Sammi.
Yes, she might have been his only friend. But it was good to see her smile. First it was a lot of television in bed. Of course, that might sound sexy to some, but there was no sex involved. Just catching up on the Tudors, then Downton Abby. Finally came other shows he didn't know much about. Sammi liked her British comedy dramas.
Eventually, they started walking. Usually, at night. Not too far. But they never ventured to places where he and Natalie might go. Instead, they'd play fussball. The gaming place made thick smoothies.
Finally, he fixed a ten speed bike up for Sammi so they could bike ride. They made it about as far as the swimming pool on campus. Of course, there was a swimming pool in their back yard, but he never wanted to see Caitlin out by the pool. No, he was interested in laps at the indoor pool. It was if he needed to work on his time, or was it his endurance?
Maybe he had nothing to do with swimming.
"Do you know how much of your stuff, you have in my room?" Sammi laughed one day, holding up his game controller and a few of his favorite video games. His dirty socks were there too.
"Maybe I moved in. Just didn't know it." He picked up the dirty socks as if he should tend to the laundry. As it was he was holding a laundry basket.
"Who would have thunk it?" She bit her bottom lip to keep from laughing.
Smed found himself genuinely happy.
"Shh..lets let'm guess." His smirk was sly. Sammi piled in her dirty clothes on top of his.
After all, his favorite pillow was here along with his laptop and even a picture of his older brother's family.
