"So everything is OK, right?" Sammi smiled as she opened the oven for Smed to slide the stuffed turkey in. It was a bit early for Thanksgiving. It wasn't even Labor day yet. But they might not all be together for the holidays since Megan and Derrick were to fly back to New York the next day.
"It looks that way." But she wasn't sure about Smed's sigh. Although, he didn't look too worried.
and Randi would be over in a few hours with Sheila. It was going to be a
nice dinner. Alex and Logan were going to help out with peeling
potatoes and carrots.
Sammi went to put a pitcher of tea in the fridge so it would be chilled. No alcoholic beverages. It was best to be safe.
"Did Alfie say if he was coming, or not?" Smed asked as he went to clean off the counter.
"I don't think so, but he said he heard from Natalie." Sammi said before she could stop herself.
"Oh, yeah? Is she back?" Smed didn't seem to act as if Natalie was a sore subject.
"Not yet, soon." Sammi bit her bottom lip as she got the trash can
closer so he could put the trash from the counter away. "He..he says
she's bringing someone home."
"Oh yeah?" Still it didn't seem to
bother him. "Guess, we'll be doing this all over again, huh?" He smiled.
It had rained most of the weekend so a cookout washout.
"Guess so." She shrugged. She pulled the flimsy light pink sweater
closer around her strappy summer dress. She still felt a chill even with
the oven on.
"Maybe the weather will be better then." He shrugged back as he went to put the trash away.
A part of her wondered if it would always be this way. The two of
them. Perhaps loners. Of course, it would be great to see Zeke and Randi
with the baby. That was always great. But she had to wonder if she
could ever be close to Caitlin or Megan.
She looked around the kitchen and it was spotless. There was
something unusual about that. There was always a cookie jar out or maybe
a water bottle or something on the counter. But this looked really
exceptionally clean. What could that mean?
Smed wore the black jeans she never saw him wear because he said
there was never ever a special occasion for them. She hadn't noticed
until now. After all, she'd helped him with the turkey. But now he was
in a buttoned down shirt. Her favorite, green plaid.
Out of no where he was on bended knee on the very clean floor. And he pulled out a ring from his pocket that held up to her.
"May I have the honor..."
was all a flutter. Perhaps she squealed as if her favorite boy band
entered the room. Her eyes were in such shock. She wasn't even sure she
"Yes.yes.yes..yes." She could hardly breath as he placed the ring on
her finger. It was a small little diamond studded on a silver band. She
wasn't sure if she could stop staring at it, but she wanted to watch
his genuine smile too.
"I really can't believe this is happening." She kept grinning as she
hugged him. Finally they kissed and it felt right. It felt warm to be
in his arms and she couldn't help but hold him tight.
