Smed listened to Dung tell him about Megan's problem.
He blew a breath as he tossed the round coins of zucchini with the cut onion in the stirfry. He was trying to get supper started. He'd been in the garden watering and brought in the eggplant along with some green beans. Sometimes, he thought he was the only one who knew they had a garden.
"So what am I suppose to do?" Smed just said, perhaps more disgruntled than he meant too. Megan hadn't exactly been nice to him when she got here. Perhaps it was the woes of pregnancy, or she was just being Megan.
He stirred the stirfry with a wooden spoon, thinking what to do. She'd probably fight him on anything he said to her. They might as well have told him a tiger escaped from the zoo and needed to be dragged out of the pool. He sighed.
Caitlin was being mute on the subject. Dung spoke for her. His arm around her. It was easy to see, they were more than friends. Smed blew another breath.
The back door opened and Timo stepped in, wearing his yellow polo shirt from DOLLAR GENERAL and cheap tan slacks. His black sneakers, dusty and warped, looked as if he was definitely walking the three miles every day to work. He looked as if he might be ready for Sunday school, if it wasn't for the sweat trickling down his face. He grabbed the cold water from the fridge.
Smed was sure Timo would have drank from the jug if they weren't here, but he did the polite thing. He reached for a glass and poured himself a drink.
"What's up?" He looked at them suspicious. "Izzy behaving?"
She didn't stay in his room during the day. The big dog had the rein of the house. She spent a lot of time out by the pool.
"She's with Alex and Logan." Smed told him.
"OK." Timo's smile was a little impish.
"You know, anything about what's going on with Meg?" Smed shrugged.
"Meg?" He looked startled. "No."
Smed noticed Caitlin giving Timo the evil eye, but Timo never looked her way. He went out the patio door to see Izzy.
"I don't trust him." Caitlin told him.
"Well, Megan is..." Smed didn't want to put her down. "Has she even seen a doctor?" What if she was blowing this out of the water. Maybe she wasn't even pregnant. "I'll talk to her." But he got back to the stirfry.
