"I'm glad I could help." Hattie told Sammi as she tied another balloon. There was a WELCOME HOME banner up in the livingroom. Alex made the banner, but he was off in the kitchen putting the final touches on a roast he'd roasted. Logan was mashing potatoes.
"Me, too." Sammi smiled as she took the balloon and put it with the others. Gavin brought the big boxed cake in and took it out of the container.
"Do you always buy someone a cake if they leave the country and then come back?" Hattie couldn't help but smile.
"I dunno, its a first." Sammi told her that usually Smed liked to make 3 tier cakes when it came to birthdays.
"He is coming? Isn't he?" Hattie wouldn't mention how Natalie was his old girlfriend. She guessed ex was a better term, but she'd use neither around Sammi.
"Oh yeah. Randi and Zeke, too." Sammi was calm about it. In a few seconds they arrived.
Hattie watched how Smed made over Sammi. She was certain now they were suppose to be together. A part of her envied them. When she thought she might be melancholy about ever wishing she could have that sort relationship with someone, Timo showed up with a cold diet Dr. Pepper just for her.
He was still in his work clothes, but he'd brought along a goodie bag filled with a few little things that maybe Natalie and Hallum might need, like toothbrushes and little things they couldn't bring with them because of air travel regulations.
"Just why would you think of this?" She wanted to know.
"Felt like it, I guess." He shrugged as if it were no big deal.
She opened the lid to her drink and took a sip.
"Thanks for the drink." She kept smiling at him. She was sure there would be wine to drink tonight along with a few other spirits of choice. But she knew not to go near it. She took his hand. His palm was so warm. It just might be electric, but she wasn't going to let herself get carried away.
