Sammi could tell Randi just hadn't been the same since Natalie went back to England with Hallum.
They'd done their best to go through the ornaments at the house as if the next big step would be to get the Christmas tree together. But she knew that sigh of Randi's, something else was on her mind as Sammi brought down another box of ornaments. She was in her comfortable overalls wither her red long sleeve Tee, underneath. She was wearing her red Converse's too. She'd just gotten back from the school she was a para-professional.
"So have you heard from Natalie?" Sammi asked as if that would be Randi's cue to tell her what was on her mind. Instead, she gave her a sleepy shrug.
"I don't know if I even care." Randi finally said as she dug out a silver bell and studied it.
"You know, you care." Sammi looked at Randi who was in her boy jeans and long sleeved thermal shirt. She looked all of twelve with her hair in pigtails.
"What does she see in him?" Randi looked so serious. "He's..so...I dunno...he acted like none of us were as wonderful as he was." She shivered as if she was glad Hallum was gone.
"Maybe he's..he's bi-polar." Sammi suggested.
"God, I'd hate to be in that family, if they all snubbed you, like he did." She let out a breath as if he was making her moody just thinking about him.
"She probably sees something she loves about him. Why would she be with him, otherwise?" Sammi shrugged, thinking how doe-eyed she'd been the first moment she saw Smed. It was intoxicating and infuriating at the same time. Thank God, he hadn't been a serial killer. Of course, he might of thought she was the psycho, back then, but she didn't want to bring that up to Natalie.
"But..but..he's not a thing like Zeke. You know, he's not understanding. This Hal doesn't want to listen. He's rude. I don't like the way he pesters her, to do all these silly things for him. Like making sure his socks match." Randi shook her head.
"Its so funny that you, are comparing him to Zeke." Sammi couldn't help but smile.
"I dunno why, I'm like that. I'm just afraid, she'll wake up one day and say to herself..what did I ever seen in this guy." Randi seemed worked up about it, but she went back to the boxes of ornaments and Sammi dashed upstairs to find the most important thing.
"Finally." She was afraid they'd lost the big box in the attic. The two struggled down the stairs with it. By the time they got to the bottom, Randi said it was time for hot tea. Which actually meant, "Lets finish off the pumpkin pie."
They stood on the spot where the tree should go, next to the stairway and looked at the box.
"I think we should get Smed and Zeke to do this." Sammi nodded.
"No, we'll get Alex to do it." Randi told her.
Sammi nodded. That would definitely work. They walked off to the kitchen. There work was done.
