"Are you sure everything is OK?" Randi wasn't certain of it, by the looks of Natalie. They would be leaving at the end of the week. Natalie was going back with Hallum.
"We're fine." Natalie was very even lipped and quiet about it. She was over to help Randi with a pot roast dinner. It was nothing special. She'd bought a bounty of bread from the bakery, as if that was all they really needed. Bread and butter.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, I invited someone over for Alfie to meet." Randi thought it was best to move on, not dwell on what ever it was that Hallum had done.
"No, you didn't." Natalie looked at her as if that was an awful idea.
"How can he meet anyone when he's with a kid all day? He's around other mothers ..who..well, old enough to be an old sister of his." Randi would not apologize.
"Did he ask you?" Natalie hugged herself in her very neat white shirt.
"He didn't ask me for anything." Randi shrugged and went back to see how the carrots were stewing in butter. She flicked her thick braid back and went to work in her little kitchen. It was a sunny place that definitely brought out her sunny smile more. She'd made cupcakes and apple sauce too.
About then, the door bell rang.
"We aren't having everyone over?" Natalie then asked.
"What? As in Smed?" Randi looked at her. She noticed how Natalie drew a frown. "Just Liza and of course, Alfie."
Natalie pressed her lips tight. Randi wasn't sure Natalie approved.
Randi went to look to see who was in the livingroom. It wasn't Alfie nor Liza.
