Logan wanted to stay up all night with his friends. He really hated to go.
"How can you be like this?" Logan said while Alex was brushing his teeth. They were going to bed early, even if it was on the futon in the reading room that no one ever read in. Instead, they watched TV and played video games there. Now they were having to sleep on the worst mattress ever. How would he ever go to sleep?
"Be like what?" Alex was being a tad indifferent, yet could remain a mystery to Logan, even if Alex didn't take his eyes off of him.
"You know, its like you don't even care." Logan shrugged.
"No, I'm not going to do this with you." Alex shook his head as he went to wash his mouth out and his tooth brush too. "You just want us to have a fight of some kind."
"We don't fight." Logan winced as if it hurt him a little that Alex would dare him like this.
"You know, what I mean." His hands touched Logan's shoulders, and Logan relaxed instantly. "We are going to Texas. Warmer weather. We can go to the beach." His smile was as if he was eager to get out of here.
"But what about Hattie?" Logan still wasn't sure about her. She looked so frail. What was going on with her?
"Hattie is fine. She's got Cait and Smed and Sammi. Even Alf." Alex shucked Logan's Tee before he had a chance to think about it.
"I'm just..scared." Logan finally confessed.
"I know." Alex kissed him as if this didn't really bother him.
They got on the futon then.
"I had a nightmare that we moved into this really shitty place. And..and there were rats and people taking drugs." Logan shivered, but Alex held him. Logan felt as if he were sinking under a hot blanket.
"You really dream some strange stuff." Alex was combing Logan's heavy bangs back with his fingers. "You know, we're in student housing, right on campus. Remember?"
Logan bit his lip. He guessed he forgot.
"I don't want to drive." Logan confessed. It was his old car. Were they sure it would even make it?
"I'm the one driving the truck." Alex smiled as if he was the one who had the worst part.
"I've never driven across this many states, you know." Logan didn't mean to be a baby about it.
"God, you'll be fine. You've never gotten a ticket." Alex snuggled more. "We'll take our time. If the weather is bad, we'll get a motel room. Not like we have to be there tomorrow." Alex played with Logan's hand, and intertwined his fingers with his.
"But..but what if those..those rednecks hate us..and..and.." Logan squinted hard not even wanting to finish the sentence.
"Trust me, we're gonna be OK." Alex kissed his troubles away.
