sooner or later

"So are you, going to call her or not?" Logan caught Alex staring at his phone as he was lounging on the couch.

Dinner was Kraft Deluxe macaroni and cheese with some carrot sticks and an apple for each of them. It was better than their steady diet of Ramen Top noodles.

"I want to, but then, you know, she should call me." He looked kind of depressed. Maybe Alex was more homesick than he wanted to admit.

"I did apply for that job." Logan plopped down next to Alex's feet on the floor. He wrapped his arms around his knees in thought. He was sure he wouldn't get a call. He'd applied at all the sandwich shops and just about every fast food place he could think of, only to learn they weren't hiring. The prospects were dismal, but this job online looked really good. It paid over twenty dollars an hour too. If only he could get it. It was at a hospital lab.

"There is always babysitting." Alex told him it wouldn't hurt to take a CPR class.

Logan nodded as if it were a good idea, but he didn't really want to do it. He didn't want to babysit, either.

"You, should just call Hattie." Logan said after a long lapse of quiet. They could hear someone's stereo playing. It was a country and western tune. They both looked at each other as if they agreed,
they hated that kind of music.

"You know, she is going to have Timo's baby, after all." Alex looked at Logan serious as if that was the worst possible news ever. "What am I suppose to say? Maybe she doesn't even want me to know." He sighed as if their little sister was hiding something from them. "You know, the right thing to do ..would be...just to drive up..and take her away from that creep."

"If you haven't noticed, Lex, she looks really happy with him." Logan reminded him.

"So." He looked perturbed about it. "The luster is bound to wear off. Who knows, what if he ups and leaves her? Then what?"

"We can hardly take care of ourselves." Logan winced.

"I know." Alex left his cell on the couch and sat next to Logan. "But I miss the snow. I miss how we were all together, cooking and eating. Even dancing in the kitchen."

"You needed to do this, so you can find a better job." Logan wondered if they were in over their heads with this move.

Alex winced hard as he put his arm around Logan's neck, who then tickled Alex in the ribs. Alex playfully told him to stop, which Logan remembered as Alex's answer to not stop. They goofed around in their not so graceful wrestling match which finally ended.. in making out somewhere under the coffee table.

The phone rang, and Alex bumped his head. It was Hattie.

Logan knew she'd call, sooner or later.
