How do we get there from here

The moment Megan was on the phone with her friend Hope, Cori knew they'd be making a trip into the night.

"How far?" He wanted to know.

"Colorado," Megan sounded it was right over the border.

He nodded thinking he should go alone, but Megan said she needed to be there. "Emotional support."

He smiled thinking he would probably need Megan's guidance more than Hope would. He'd never driven to Colorado before.

"We can take turns driving, if you want." She got her backpack ready. It looked like enough supplies for both of them. He didn't even bother.

Cori wasn't sure he liked the idea but found himself saying, "Sure." But he hoped they didn't have to. He thought Megan drove like a race car driver.

"What happened?' He asked as they were getting ready to go in his car. Megan hurried along as if they had no time to waste.

"Oh, something to do with his ex and their baby." Megan planted herself in the front seat with a few bottles of water and a thermos of coffee. "It seems, he just left Hope all on her own in the wilderness."

"Left her?" Cori winced. It just didn't seem fair to him.

"Yeah, she walked to the nearest town. Her phone was dead."

"And it's winter," It gave Cori a shiver. "Are you sure she's all right?"

"Oh, a little shaken, but she's always been the quiet type. It's like nothing ever rattles Hope." Megan told him as they drove toward the interstate. He took all the exits that said COLORADO. It wasn't long until they were heading west into the darkness.

Cori pushed his dark bangs out of his face. This was serious. He wanted to make sure to get there. He sighed, thinking the timing was crazy. At least, Hope could move back into her old room.

"Did you tell Caitlin?" He asked.

"I know I should. I guess. I dunno. I hate to bother her," Megan said as she watched the road with him.

"But aren't they friends?"

"Oh, Hope was more my friend than Caitlin's." She nodded.

"I see," Cori guessed he should have expected that. It seemed a good many of Caitlin's friends were male.

He drove on into the night wide awake. After all, Megan told Hope they were coming.

  6. Well, this is an interesting turn of events. Abandoning someone in the cold is about as cruel as you can get. I hope that Hope's okay!
