Wade's boxed mattress arrived. He'd taken Melvin's credit card and ordered one on Amazon. If he was staying for the long haul, he wanted his own bed. He'd gotten a regular extra long. He'd always wanted one. Otherwise, his legs would hang off of it.
He also thought of checking out the rooms down the hall for a place of his own. But it was so pitiful and trashed he came back to Melvin's and found a room that could have been for guests. Of course, it was packed with boxes of crappy stuff. Nothing Wade found significant. He moved boxes around while the sheets washed and dried. He would have to have special sheets for the mattress that was now by the thin window.
He went to find sheets for the window. They were brilliantly white and he strung them up with a string and two nails. Actually, he liked his handy work. Melvin had a few pillows so he took them and a few extra pillowcases.
For a second, he thought he might be creating his own love den. Of course, he had no idea who it would be.
Just then his phone rang. It was Caitlin of course, checking up on Melvin.
"Are you really taking care of him?" She asked.
"Of course." He told her as if it were a no brainer. "Every hour." He assured her.
"Are you in love with him?" She wanted to know ever so seductively.
"Are you high?'"
"Possibly, but who the hell cares?" He could hear her blowing smoke.
"You are the worst friend in the world," Wade told her. He knew it from the moment he saw her. She was only out to score whatever she could for herself. She was a needy brat in his eyes.
"Eat shit," she said. He laughed at her.
"What are you doing?"
"What do you fucking think I'm doing?" She was in a mood.
"Nevermind." He'd never stand for someone like her. He wanted someone who valued the same things he did.
"Is that your mantra?" She giggled.
"Why did you call?" Wade was perturbed. He'd be half asleep right now if Caitlin hadn't called.
"I've found someone who makes me totally happy, and it isn't you." Her words slurred ever so slightly. He wasn't sure if she was drunk or just high. Probably both.
"Have you now? Did I really need to know, or you just need to say it? Cause it's far from the truth," Wade's upper lip edged at the corner with a delightful smirk.
"What do you mean?" She sounded stunned.
"Just keep telling yourself how happy you are," he said. "But we both know it's not true."
"It is true." She shot back.
"Whatever." He smirked more as if he loved agitating her. "I'd never settle for someone like you. Let's hope he's not too complicated. Or, is it a she?"
He sighed with relief putting Caitlin in her place.
"Oh, there's no change in Melvin," Wade then said. "Happy now?"
Caitlin couldn't answer him.
Each day is more and more interesting. 👏👏👏

ReplyDeletegood part...
I really liked this chapter. As has been mentioned already there's a nice gentle story to it. Let's see what happens next.
ReplyDeleteThey dialogue sounds pretty bitter on both ends. Sometimes people are like that, when they pretend they don't care.
