a glitter of something

Who's idea was it to go roller skating? Caitlin didn't think any existed anymore. But of course, Deano knew. "It'll be fun!" He said. After all, her little brother needed some fun.

Not that she'd had a real conversation with him. But Deano knew Rico had his driver's license and he'd just been dumped by the girl he'd known since middle school.

She rolled her eyes at this information. So what. There was so much to worry about. Especially, with her job and her Dad. Now Mario had decided he would take that handyman job in the apartment building. He would still be living in Caitlin and Megan's old apartment. Naturally, he didn't go roller-skating with them.

"What's wrong now?" Rico asked after he had done practically an Olympic performance for them out on the empty floor. Obviously, no one went to the skating rink anymore. He did all sorts of dance moves. She bet he could do flips if given a chance. How in the world did he do it?

"Nothing," she felt kind of sad. Mario should be here, but he was taking care of someone's toilet or fixing someone's cable.

Caitlin stood still on the rocky skates and watched her little brother skate backward. Finally, Deano took Caitlin's hand and they turned in circles. She was practically dizzy and yet it was a thrill to know Deano knew to skate so well.

They were supposed to wear masks, but since no one was here they went solo, so to speak. Naturally, Deano left her to race Rico around the rink. She went to grab the rail and watched as if she was their biggest fan.

Afterward, they stopped by Roman's who had supper waiting. It was good to find Lala, who of course, wanted to know where Mario was. Of course, Rico texted him and got a text back. "He said he could come by if that was OK with you?" He looked at LaLa.

"Well, of course, I want to see him." Her smile was genuine and Caitlin knew then that someone had a crush on her big brother.

"Is Roman OK with that?" Caitlin wanted to know.

"Oh, who cares what Roman wants." She shrugged. Naturally, she asked Rico all sorts of questions. Questions Caitlin couldn't think to ask. It was as if she wanted to know her little brother, she needed Lala there to ask.

Rico was all smiles as if he loved to have someone adore him. Perhaps, he was a little messed up, a lot like Caitlin, as that kid leftover from someone's relationship who now had a real family. She felt kind of sad for him. All this time, she thought he had it so much better than her, but they were more alike after all.

  6. This skating outing is so fun! It's sweet that Caitlin's thrilled that Deano can skate so well. It's true that no one goes skating anymore, which makes it seem even more retro. The floral skates in the collage are groovy. :) Also, although there are threads of sadness throughout this chapter, it's nice to see Caitlin becoming closer with Rico. You write about her emotions so beautifully: "Perhaps, he was a little messed up, a lot like Caitlin, as that kid leftover from someone's relationship who now had a real family. She felt kind of sad for him. All this time, she thought he had it so much better than her, but they were more alike after all."

Your last comment about Tori was reassuring. It's funny how you read about a character -- and then other people's comments about that character -- and get these preconceived ideas. In this case, that Tori is going down a dark path. But when you suggested that Tori's using her crocheting as a means of therapy, it made total sense. Especially when you said that it's good that she's doing something. Severely depressed people usually can't focus enough to do anything, let alone crochet.

    1. Thanks so much for the comments. I guess our skating rink is making a comeback..or it might be a very short one. I notice you can still have a party there. Although, our skateland is now skate city. A decade or so a murder had happened actually on the river, but the killer was everyone's JOY to watch there where he worked. He got mixed up with a group of high schoolers who were into drugs who thought they were vampires. Actually, I think he was just trying to save this girl from an abusive boyfriend. But he's still in jail.
