Dylan was torn. Not sure what would come next. Yes, Tori had the baby. It felt as if everything was in its place. Even he was. Except for one thing.
Midway, through the whole ordeal, while he was out getting ice chips for Tori, someone approached him. There was a look in their eye that they knew perfectly well who he actually was. But he walked away. More important things were at hand. Like the birth of a child, their child.
"Hannah?" The nurse called to him. Instantly, Dylan stopped and practically flushed. This was not the day he wanted someone to bring up that name. He didn't want to look back. He needed to be with Tori. He turned slightly and remembered who she was. Someone from the past. Andi.
He kept his head down. Thinking, could one person mess this day up. Completely.
Honestly, he didn't want to think about Andi. But there was a time, everyone wanted her attention and she knew it. She thrived in being number one. Of course, back then one would have thought she was the queen of the girl-gang even if she more men's clothes and was coldly stoic and sometimes a bully.
Dylan remained closed-lipped. It was best to ignore her. So he went back in and did his best not to think of Andi and hope she wouldn't be the one who caused them grief. After all, the currants of Tori's labor went from casual moments into the deep of grinding teeth and definitely an ugly war of some kind.
Naturally, Deano showed up with a present and fast food. Basically, newborn disposable diapers. He could have been a visiting pastor of some kind. All smiles, keeping conversation light. Actually, he wasn't supposed to be here, but they let him in because he said he was Dylan's brother.
Dylan sighed thinking so many lies. "Oh, it'll be fine. You'll see." Deano grinned and gave him a pat on the back. "Caitlin wanted to come, but you know her. She's squeamish and felt she'd do more harm than good."
"I guess it'll have to be." Dylan was practically mute. Honestly, he wasn't fond of meeting Melvin's son face to face, but he knew he'd have to be ready. A part of him just knew the nightmare was actually beginning. How was he going to get through this?
All he could do was remind himself that the child was his. He knew what to say. How to be. But it kept him on edge. And when he saw the infant, he felt faint. How could this be? It didn't look like Melvin at all. The baby looked more like Dylan.

Maybe I spoke too soon about things being calm. Of all the times for Dylan to run into a not-so-nice someone from the past! I love the part about Deano bringing sustenance; he really is a ray of sunshine. I even identified with Caitlin's staying home due to squeamishness -- that's me all over. But the end was the real kicker. Tori's baby looks like . . . Dylan?! Very interesting. And, perhaps, symbolic?
ReplyDeleteGreat chapter. It is good Dylan managed to keep a cool head.
ReplyDeleteReally got a feel for the characters. I enjoyed it immensely.
