Cori had offered to give Melvin's old car to Cyrus. "I don't really use it."
"Oh, no..." Cyrus would have none of that. After all, Frankie had let him go car shopping with him. It wasn't like they went out and bought Pixie the latest sport's car. He didn't have that kind of money.
In fact, it was a used "the cube" Nissan. It didn't have many miles on it and it wasn't that old. It was a periwinkle blue. Although, Frankie would have preferred a bright red so everyone could see her coming. Cyrus had only chuckled. He'd never believe Pixie to be a race car driver.
It had been settled. Cyrus would manage the car insurance. "As long as I don't have to drive." It was something he couldn't even imagine. It made him nervous at the thought. But somehow, they would suffice. Even if Pixie lived with Frankie and he stayed at Cori's, they'd be OK.
On Christmas morning, she was in the state of shock. It was if she'd won a game show. Her dance of glee was enough to make Cyrus want to jump around with her. How had this happened? Naturally, he said it was all Frankie's doing.
Of course, it was pretty cold out, but they went for a drive anyway. After all, they had the road to themselves. She kept smiling and he was thrilled that she liked the car. Of course, the car was from 2013 and there was still a CD player. Once they had the tunes going, Cyrus was sure they could have driven all day. Only, there was half a tank of gas and their stomachs rumbled by mid-morning.
"You think you got a good feel for it?" He asked when they came back to his place with donuts.
"Yeah, I love it!" She was full of laughter and that's the way he wanted her to be. She made him laugh too as they ate donuts and drank creamed coffee. They talked about what they'd name the car. Naturally, it was a male car and she liked names like Karl or Boris. "No, let's name it Jayhawk," Cyrus smiled. After all, the only CD she had was the Best of the Jayhawks and for the first time, he loved that this was the soundtrack of their life together even if it was quite mellow at times.
"But..but I didn't get you anything," Pixie finally admitted. She didn't do any Christmas shopping. "I didn't have time. And..and I really didn't have the money." After all food and gas were so expensive these days.
"Oh, spending Christmas with you is just what I wanted." He grinned more. "I'm glad I could talk Frankie into getting you a car."
Aww

ReplyDeleteAwww, sometimes the best present is spend the time with people you love.
ReplyDeleteThe joy of Christmas is even so, it is mainly because of the company. I loved the text, it conveys the beauty and richness of simple and pleasant moments. I wish you a happy new year! :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a great chapter. I didn't do any Christmas shopping either.
ReplyDeleteWhat is important for Christmas is being with those we love.
I see....
ReplyDeleteinteresting to read
Love this! Cyrus being so happy that Pixie is happy is the very definition of Christmas: "She was full of laughter and that's the way he wanted her to be." The part about Cyrus being too nervous to learn how to drive is poignant. I used to be afraid to drive too; it took me years to get comfortable with it.
ReplyDeleteThat's so -- well, maybe funny isn't the right word, so I'll say interesting -- that you dropped a can of black-eyed peas on your big toe, inspiring the same to happen to Deano. That sounds so painful; I'm glad it's better! And your Christmas sounds like it was a festive hoot, what with all the eggnog shenanigans. :)
Woow very interesting! What about the name "Karl"?
