Right Where You Left Me

"Please tell me you got an appointment," Megan felt as if she was pleading with Caitlin over the phone. What was the matter with her? Not wanting to go to a prenatal visit.

Naturally, Caitlin only sighed. "Yes, do you want to come with me?" She asked.

Megan couldn't speak. She shook the thought of the last time she was at an appointment like that. "No, you need Deano with you." She did her best to smile hoping Caitlin knew she was smiling. "Your doctor will be glad you did." She reminded her there would be ultra-sounds and other tests. It was a good time for a couple to be together. "Just get it done." She couldn't say anymore.

When Megan got off the phone she saw her grandmother watching her. They'd gotten her grandparents into an apartment next to them. Perhaps it was their way to keep the building running. Her grandparents had stored their camper trailer for the winter.

"Are you all right?" She asked Megan.

"It's good. I think they'll be all right. Deano doesn't have a fever and only a cough now." He'd coughed up blood in the beginning but now he was OK.

"I'm talking about you," her grandmother gave her a look that only her grandmother could give her, wanting to know the real truth.

"It's fine. I don't want to talk about it." She never had and she never would. It wouldn't do any good.  But she couldn't help but cry just a little because it still hurt. It would always hurt.

If only Garth had been there for her when she needed him, but he'd said back then...they were just kids. Couldn't she figure it out?

Naturally, Megan went to the bathroom and cried herself a river. If her grandmother wasn't here she'd be taking a long hot shower about now. Of course, her grandmother had curtains on her mind. They needed new curtains at their place and she found some fabric on sale. Megan just needed to take her there because no one wanted her driving anymore. She'd had too many traffic tickets.

"Just let me put on some makeup," Megan called out.

"What are you putting on makeup for?" Her grandmother called back through the bathroom door. "You'll be wearing a mask and we're picking up the fabric at the curb."

Megan cleared her throat. Yes, it was best to go on. She always had, but sometimes even on a sunny day, she could feel blue.

  2. Megan always seems so strong, so I liked getting a glimpse of her vulnerable side. It's cool how you give us clues about what's upset her, yet leave us wondering. Like, did Megan lose a baby when she was younger? Is she unable to have kids now? And who is Garth? Yet whatever the answers are -- and I'm sure they're coming! -- her willingness to talk Caitlin through her pregnancy shows her strength of character.

That fruit in the collage is gorgeous! If only I could find pre-cut produce like that. :)
