As luck would have it

"I know, I'm still shocked I didn't get COVID from Deano," Caitlin smiled with a shrug as she cracked one more nut from the shell. She wished she was talking to Megan but her brother was over with more groceries. Of course, Deano was now at his new job and Caitlin had even gone back to work, but they never had time for grocery shopping.

"Oh, you must have done something right," Mario beamed back.

"Actually, we didn't have sex," she was honest. "I mean, as soon as he found out I was pregnant he's been..." she wrinkled her nose as if to detest. "Oh, I won't say he's a priest, but you know like I'm too hot to handle."

"Yeah, I'm sure you are." Mario went with it, but she knew she'd hit a nerve.

"And how's your love life?" She winked.

He practically rolled his eyes and looked away.

"Nowhere near your standards." He was quick to smile with a slight sigh. "We.." He shook his head, but she could tell how timid he really was and it made her want to laugh. "We..we do things."

"Oh really?" She couldn't imagine him putting his arm around Bren while watching TV.

"Well, you know, we..we do stay in."

"Yeah, and you two have practically alphabetized your spices by now." She knew him. She knew how organized he was.

"What's wrong with that?" He shot her a look as if it might have been the best of times.

"I just hope you'll be sweet. Valentines Day will be here before you know it," Caitlin shrugged. She looked at another roasted nut in the bag and did her best not to want to crack it and then eat the peanut.

"Of course, we'll do something," he told her.

"I bet you haven't even kissed her."

He winced. She'd guessed right.

"What are you waiting for?"

"I don't know."

"I can't believe we're even siblings sometimes," Caitlin looked at him even lipped as if she thought he might be too good to be true.

"What's that supposed to mean?" He looked hurt. "I guess you take after Dad, after all."

"Dad?" She didn't like that idea. Mario did have a way of getting her into a pout. She stomped away in her sweatpants and old tee. She needed juice so she went to see what was in the fridge.

"He could fall in love with a pot roast," Mario then said.

"You are just overthinking with Bren," she told him, but she didn't look at him as she went to get a glass to pour the juice in. "You just have to let it happen."

  1. I love the dialogue between these two- it sounds so natural. Sometimes siblings just get one another, even when they are different but at the same time they can think differently- and be quite different one from another. Caitlin sounds like someone who knows how to smile at her troubles and that is always good. It seems like Mario is doing the same. Sometimes humor is the best cure for stress.

  6. Such a good convo between Caitlin and her bro! It's entertaining when she teases him about his sex life wit Bren . . . and when he says she could fall in love with a pot roast. Also, I'm so glad to hear that Caitlin didn't catch Deano's COVID. And that Deano's recovered. :)

The tie dye sweats in the collage look so cozy. And I loved seeing my purple plaid with "be who you need to be" on it! :)
