Deano didn't know if he could express enough gratitude. Honestly, he was filled with happiness. Especially, after hearing the baby's heartbeat. Never in a million years had he thought he'd be here for such a monumental moment and so much more to come.
"I really thought I was going to pass out," he said to Roman when he found him at home. Of course, Eddie was there but he was off in his sewing room.
"Well, you are the man," Roman got out the good beer and they had a toast.
"I've never been on a drug quite like it," Deano nodded. Yet he couldn't let himself drink. He was going to be a Dad and that took preparation.
"Does this mean, you're the new Deano?" Roman just smiled, but of course, he drank up.
Deano shook with laughter. "It's just you know, should I be spending every minute with Caitlin?" He looked as if he was in the wrong place after all.
"Well, she's just down the hall, my friend," Roman got Deano situated as the Olympics were on. Deano guessed he could stay awhile even if he was just holding a beer. He'd put it to his lips, but he couldn't take a taste. Honestly, everything still tasted a bit like shit as of late.
He hoped Caitlin was really OK. He wondered what she was doing. But then he remembered she'd gotten a huge jar of peanut butter that she said she would use with carrots and celery, but he'd seen her dipping pretzels in it. He sighed.
"What's wrong?"
"Oh, she really has a good appetite these days," he nodded.
"Maybe she's feeding a football player," Roman grinned as he put his arm around Deano.
He winced back, wondering what Eddie would think. He wiggled out of the embrace. Why hadn't he noticed how lovey-dovey Roman could be?
"Oh, my parents never let my brother or me play sports," Deano then remembered. "They just about had a heart failure when they found out I had a skateboard." Deano hoped he wasn't that way. He wanted a son to have choices. Especially, when it came to sports.
"You say that now," Roman assured him he might change his mind if he was just trying to protect the kid.
"What about you and Eddie?"
"What about us?"
"You know, kids?"
Roman kind of laughed. "Well, we're doing good to take care of each other, right now, but who knows." He then said they'd have to move out of their tiny place before that could happen.
Deano winced. Yes, he knew their future meant finding a home in the burbs and that was just one more scary thought.
👏👏👏

ReplyDeleteAw, our little Deano is growing up! It's endearing to hear him worry about Caitlin and his future baby boy. I'm sure he'll make a great dad. I like that he doesn't want to limit his son's choices like his parents limited his. It's interesting when he has the thought about Roman being lovey-dovey.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comments! What you said about your grandmothers and great-grandmothers having such difficult lives was sad but strangely beautiful. Somehow, we all persevere throughout the struggles of the ages. I particularly enjoyed when you said: "It's amazing we aren't all insane ... just a little zany." So witty and so true! :)
Very interesting! But this is life. Bye the way; Caitlin will become a good mom.
