And if it was an open-shut case

Mona didn't realize how bitter she was until she saw them together. She knew Rico couldn't see her.

Of course, she wanted to see him happy, but not with Tristan's sister. Not Liv.

Mona's left eye hurt. It flinched in anger. Of course, there were other worries. She had not led a clean slate by any means. Not these days. Tristan left her in so many ups and downs. They'd start out as a fresh new day, but give them thirty minutes and they were arguing about the stupidest things.

She sighed, honestly he was a control freak, and the more she was around him she wanted to be uncontrollable ...so she was.

It was hard to imagine it now. How it happened. There were no thoughts about why. It just did. But she couldn't drink the bourbon fast enough, in spite of the haunting throat burn. It was nothing. Of course, she'd drank on an empty stomach with that guy at the gas station she'd obliviously walked into in the middle of a cold dark night. It was a wonder she didn't end up in a snowbank of some kind with a slit throat. That had actually happened to her mom's kid sister that she never got a chance to call Aunt Belinda.

Something like that worried her now as she kept aloof in the high school hallway. Maybe it did run in the family after all. She sighed with a wince and shook the thought. Honestly, she was fine. Everything was all right. But she remembered waking up in a warm bed. She got up to go to the bathroom and there was a child staring up at her when she opened the bathroom door to leave. He said, "Mommy?"

It was just a bad dream now. But she couldn't let Tristan know. She didn't want trouble from him. She knew how he was. He was no savior. Just a monster who liked to dress nice.

She had some thinking to do. She needed to get away.

"But where would you go?" A friend from Psychology asked earlier that day.

"Maybe Rome," Mona nodded. She just didn't say Rome, New York. Her mother's people were from there. Still, it was a frigid time to go, but she might not have any choice in the matter.

  6. I was surprised -- but glad -- to hear from Mona again. She's clearly having a time of it, and I feel for her. The language in this installment is electric. My favorite parts are:

"It was a wonder she didn't end up in a snowbank of some kind with a slit throat. That had actually happened to her mom's kid sister that she never got a chance to call Aunt Belinda."

"It was just a bad dream now. But she couldn't let Tristan know. She didn't want trouble from him. She knew how he was. He was no savior. Just a monster who liked to dress nice."

It's interesting how her friend from Psych of all classes asks her about her plans. And when she says Rome -- New York! -- well, I didn't see that one coming. Anyway, this is wonderfully written, suspenseful and character-driven as always.
