In my defense, I have none, for never leaving well enough alone.

Nic hoped he did the right thing. He wanted to call an ambulance but decided to put some of his paramedic skills to use. Yes, one more thing he could have been but decided not to. Soon enough he got the girl to a booth. Before long he had a burger and shake waiting for her as he slowly got her to awake.

"When's the last time you've eaten?" He asked. Her pulse was steady.

"Eaten?" She winced hard, but he didn't think she was drunk. She didn't smell of alcohol. She only sighed as if she really wanted to sleep in his arms.

"Do you want me to call an ambulance?" It was at a lull at the moment. Maybe he could drive her, but he knew his old uncle would tell him to just call an ambulance.

She shook her head, no, and sat back up that time.

"Maybe..maybe a milkshake would help," Nic looked her over to see if her eyes were dilated. "You aren't on drugs are you?"

She laughed at him then as if that was the funniest thing. "Of course not."

Nic nodded.

"Is there anyone I can call?"

"No." She sounded adamant as if he better not snoop through her wallet.

"What's a guy like you doing here?" She wanted to know.

He thought that was funny. He knew it was a bad time to laugh. Nic then said he got that a lot, or so it seemed. During his Freshman year at the university, they kept putting him in the Asian clubs and foreign student situations. He was just indigenous.

"I'm actually from Crazy Horse." He told her.

"Crazy Horse?" She winced hard as if that was really crazy.

"My dad works at the monument," he said he'd grown up in an old house trailer not far from there.

"I'm Nic from Crazy Horse." He assured her as he waited for her to introduce herself. But of course, she looked at him as if he'd let her down somehow. Only she took to the shake and she reached for the ketchup to put on the fries. She scarfed down the meal in no time.

"Look, I'm kind of out cash," she finally said.

"Don't worry about it."

"Do you have any jobs?" She squinted with a lopsided smile.

"Well, maybe you need to tell me your name first," Nic said.

"Fine," she looked him over. "It's Mona. Just Mona."

"Mona." Nic scratched the back of his neck. He guessed he'd have to check on the web to see about any new runaways.

  4. This is so strangely romantic! And I should've realized that the mystery girl was Mona, after her passing out in the last installment. Nic's a modern knight in shining armor alright. Even if Mona's (albeit mostly internal) reaction is less than flattering. ' "Crazy Horse?" She winced hard as if that was really crazy." Funny!
