Dinner for two

"What happened this time?" Roman eyed the clock. It was late. Why was Eddie so late? Sure he'd left dinner for him warming in the oven, but Roman wanted to have dinner with him. Was that too much to ask?

"Oh, it was a thing with Alex," he sighed. Roman could tell Eddie didn't get through to him.

"I don't know why you bother," he didn't mean to sound angry, but he was certain some did take advantage of Eddie, and of course, he would let them.

Roman got out the dinner. Of course, there was enough meatloaf for both of them. He didn't know why Eddie thought Roman could eat so much. Roman portioned it out.

Eddie gave him a look, why did he know he'd be hungry by now?

"God it's late." Eddie looked at the clock.

"It's not that late. Just eight-thirty," Roman shrugged.

"But I don't eat anything after four." Eddie looked at him blankly as if he should know.

"I know, but I don't think you eat enough. You are always so restless in your sleep." Roman had stopped counting how many times Eddie could kick him in one night.

Eddie ate without comment.

"So what's up with this Alex?"

"Oh, you know, just a kid full of raging hormones," Eddie said before he took a sip of cold milk that Roman poured for him.

Roman kind of laughed then, but his open smile waned. "I know it ain't easy." He nodded and scooped in a spoon of mashed potatoes and brown gravy.

"I don't really have any answers for him," Eddie nodded. "I tried to scare him."

"You tried to scare him?" Roman almost spewed his potatoes. He shook with laughter.

"I told him he should fear Monkey Pox." That's when he told Roman about his cousin in California. "She's afraid she has Money Pox, but I'm sure it's just cellulitis."

"Cellulitis?" Roman winced. "Damn, what's that girl been up to?"

"She had COVID recently. Ever since then, she seems to get these skin infections," Eddie told him.

"God, always something to worry about," Roman shook his head as he finished off his milk a sapped up what was left on his plate with a piece of moist white bread. He always cleaned his plate.

  6. Roman always amuses me! ' "You tried to scare him?" Roman almost spewed his potatoes. He shook with laughter." And yet his reaction also made me feel kind of bad for Eddie, who was clearly trying so hard to help Alex. On a random note, Eddie never eats after 4?! But each to his own. Plus, I know this revelation wasn't really about his food schedule, but about Roman not knowing his habits and needs.

Finally, it was only a matter of time before Monkey Pox made it into one of these stories! Ooh, I hope no one catches it.
