"She's going to finish high school," Gabe said about Sammie when Pan asked if she was getting her GED. "She can take college courses, this year."
It was the right thing to do. Although, sometimes he felt he was telling her, "They didn't build Rome in a day." Sammie wanted to keep working too. She wanted to do it all. He hated to see her this overworked. That was why he kept on at the coffee shop even if he ran the digging machine most days of the week too.
They were saving money. They were keeping busy.
"Are you sure this is what you want to do?" Pan sounded like a wizard, somehow.
"Are you doing what you want to do?" Gabe said right back with a faint smirk.
He got a shrug from his twin brother.
"I think you could do more." They were alone. Rox was out with Nonnie and Gabe was watching Pan fix something on the TV.
Gabe pushed his hands deep into the empty pockets of his Levis. Here he'd said it and he knew Pan wasn't listening. As usual, he was on autopilot. Pan would rather be alone playing his game, perched on his couch and the king of his lonely domain.
"Rox isn't happy." Gabe simply said, "And you don't even care."
"That is not true," Pan snapped. "I..I just don't know what to do."
"Well, do something." Gabe hated to sound evil. It was just the truth.
"It could tear us apart," Pan did look sad about it.
"Oh, things will always tear us apart. Jobs don't stay where you want them to. You can't even count on a good apartment staying within your means. You just keep going, and hope it's for the best." He never heard his dad say it. Yet, he could see a lot of his dad in his brother too. Maybe Gabe was the one more like his mom than he even knew.
Pan only frowned as he brushed his blonde hair back, he wouldn't say a word.
"If she means anything to you, do something." Gabe stared at him as if he knew Pan knew better.
"Something?"
"You'll know what it is when you see it." Gabe remained straight-lipped as if he might be his brother's ghost.
Pan sighed.
"Fine, be that bitter you. Maybe she'll wake up and leave. Then what?" Gabe knew he hit a nerve. There was a hope that his brother could make a difference if he tried.

Two brothers, Gabe and Pan,were alone and having a talk. Life is not easy for both of them. Gabe and Sammie were saving money, thus working hard. Gabe urged Pan to do something about Rox feeling unhappy, before it's too late and she might leave. He hit a nerve here.
ReplyDeleteThat's what brothers are for.
I like this conversation between two brothers. It feels honest.
ReplyDeleteTough love. Gabe trying to help Pan. I'm not sure at this point if I want Pan and Rox to make it or for her to strike out . I gues we'll see... I like how Gabe and Sammie are trying to save money, they're working hard. Good for them. :)

Hola!! a veces hacer algo o tomar decisiones no son fรกciles por temor.
ReplyDeletePan the wizard -- I like that! And it certainly seems to fit him here: "Pan would rather be alone playing his game, perched on his couch and the king of his lonely domain." Of course, being a lone wolf/ruler doesn't bode so well for him and Rox. Gabe's right in saying that they need to talk. He's wise, that one! ๐๐ง♂️⭐
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for including my plaid skirt in the collage! It's hard to believe that it'll soon be in circulation again! ๐๐ค๐ค๐
