Rico was doing his best to make the most of it at the wedding. Yes, there were so many giving toast. The foods to eat. More rounds of toasts, and even Rico had to say a few words. Although, he couldn't recollect what he'd even said. It was a dizzy night, but at least it felt like autumn in the air.
It was getting to him by the end, but he didn't think anyone noticed. Sure Sammie's friend was pretty much a flirt. If he had it his way, he would be in his room playing Fortnight. But he knew he had to be there for Mario. Who seemed oblivious to everyone but Bren.
Of course, it felt endless. There was the dancing with Bren and her father. Tristan's mom stepped in and danced with Mario. And Rico hung back watching Sammie and Gabe just hugging each other and barely moving while Ali put Diago to the test. Rico had to chuckle. He just knew they'd do the tango.
Then Vada took his hand, and without a word, he followed her to where everyone was dancing in the back yard. Rico put on his sixth-grade moves because that was all he had. Of course, he could run miles around his dance partner, but Vada wouldn't have that.
Rico almost had a fit of coughing, but he straightened up as if his mother was there and he was supposed to follow her lead. He shuffled along as if he might be out on a thrill ride. He looked over and saw Roman and Eddie dancing like they knew each other's steps. Of course, Eddie looked over at him as if they'd stop if they needed to and come over to show him how to do the two-step.
Vada kept smiling as if she might be a cowgirl or a fluttering fairy if need be. And then Dale and Tristan were whirling like birds in love. Rico couldn't believe it. He practically stopped in his tracks but Vada pulled him along. They edged away because Holden was going to dance with his sister.
Rico winced. He didn't know they even knew each other. Had they spoken? Holden didn't say much. Dora talked. Of course, she was Dale's friend. Still, it was so formal, but it was like watching something from Beauty and the Beast.
Rico knew Mario wasn't happy about it. As if Holden might do something awful. But he was a very good dancer. And they glided to THE TIME OF MY LIFE. Bren kept even lipped. She didn't show any emotions really. In the end, she thanked him and then she turned to Rico.
"I'm saving the last dance for you," she said.
Rico grinned. Of course, it wasn't a close dance. They got on their groove to The Sufaris' Wipe Out.
