This was really happening. The internship. Naturally, Deano kept telling her she could do this. He even did breathing exercises with Caitlin. Not only that, he'd spent a good chunk of his savings on her wardrobe. Oh, he was going to help even if she didn't want him to.
Of course, she wanted him too. Honestly, she didn't know if she could even handle it. After all, she was listless these days, but somehow she'd jumped into action as if she was excited about this internship, too.
And to put the icing on the cake, so to speak, he'd given her the couples ring she'd been dreaming about. She could have looked at her name and his engraved on the simple gold ring for hours. For a good twenty minutes it felt her life had lifted off into an unknown of happiness. But she was here now and there was just too much to sit through. And her feet were killing her.
By lunch she was happy to read Deano's sweet note in the pretty lunch bag he'd put together for her with an extra Dr. Pepper and Cheetos. He'd made his famous turkey cheese and apple sandwich with a bit of spinach. It was amazing!
She was famished and by the time she was done, after her cupcake..she needed a nap.
Finally, there was work to do. Some filing for cases that were coming up, and the mail. Actually, some mail needed tending too.
She liked the mailroom. If only she could stay here. All these caseworkers were a bit stuffy, but most were in comfortable shoes. Caitlin was beginning to think she'd dressed up too much. But since Deano bought all these career clothes for her, she had to wear them..she had to.
While she was filing mail, she started to wonder if she cared about Deano enough. What if she was the worst girlfriend in the world? She kept looking at the ring. CAITLIN & DEANO. When had she ever given him anything? Did she even know when his birthday was? What did he even like? The questions multiplied.
And now she felt very sad.
Then someone asked if she could go to the commons, there was a little boy who was waiting to be sent to foster care, but there was still paperwork to be done. "Just stay with him in the play area."
Caitlin nodded. Hopefully, he wouldn't give her any trouble. He was all of three, but they'd put him in disposable pants, and he was in joggers and a sweatshirt.
Caitlin smiled at him. His big brown eyes looked at her as if he was still in shock and he was so alone. He came to her as if he needed a hug. Caitlin kept her cool. This was the last thing she expected. But there was a certain comfort having him in her lap. Now, she wondered if she'd been the exact same way with Deano.
Very nice.
ReplyDeleteI think Caitlin is overthinking things. I'm sure she's not the worst girlfriend in the world. If Deano wants to be with her, then she must have some qualities that attract him.
ReplyDeleteI love this part btw: Caitlin smiled at him. His big brown eyes looked at her as if he was still in shock and he was so alone. He came to her as if he needed a hug. Caitlin kept her cool. This was the last thing she expected. But there was a certain comfort having him in her lap. Now, she wondered if she'd been the exact same way with Deano.
Such an awakening moment for Caitlin.

ReplyDeleteNice blog... i like
ReplyDeleteBreathing exercises, a new wardrobe, a homemade lunch, and a ring?! Deano is the best boyfriend ever! I felt sad when Caitlin was having doubts about him but then thought, well, even the best boyfriend isn't really the best if he isn't the best for you. Then your ending swung everything back in the other direction, and I was so glad that Caitlin was thinking that she and Deano fit after all. Unless that's just wishful thinking and it meant something else entirely. Either way, wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteNice :-)
ReplyDeleteMaybe she's afraid to hurt his feelings or maybe she is keeping him in her back pocket just in case. She have to decide, once and for all😏
