No fooling

When the lady across the hall gave Deano the Heavy Duty Singer sewing machine, he could only think of one place to take it. No way could he keep it at his small place and he knew Caitlin would have no use for it. Still, as he looked at the machine he thought of fond memories of his mother's sewing days.

He didn't know if this was the right thing to do, taking it to Dylan and Tori's. He'd found out their address from Caitlin who told him a lot of things when she was drunk or high. Of course, he didn't mention this to Tori when she answered the apartment door.

"I'm Deano," he told her. "Caitlin's boyfriend." He guessed he should get used to it. After all, things were tight now. He'd given her a ring the morning she started her internship at the social service's place.  And she was happy. All was well, but he was sure he shouldn't keep this from her. Caitlin wanted to know everywhere he went.  He might text her later at lunch.

Tori only nodded and let him into the apartment with the sewing machine.

"Caitlin says Dylan already has a fancy sewing machine. He might not need this at all, but I thought maybe you might like to have your own." He told her about the neighbor moving back to Hong Kong and she couldn't take it with her. He knew Caitlin and Dylan went way back when Dylan was Hannah.

She showed him a place to take it. "I can sew a little," Tori said she wanted to learn more.

"No telling what you might find on Youtube," he smiled. She wanted him to sit in the livingroom while she went to make tea.

"So true," she agreed about studying up sewing on Youtube as she brought him creamed earl gray and some Girlscout shortbread cookies.

"We live right across the street from you," he said. Of course, it felt like a world away. He lived in a newer building, or so it felt while the tall ceiling of where Dylan and Tori cohabitate looked practically ancient. It was bigger, but he wasn't sure how energy efficient it might be.

Tori did her best to smile with a shrug. She said she never went out anymore.

"But why?" He asked. "It's warming up."

"I guess," she hugged herself as if she didn't want him to ask about the baby. "I don't like change, evidently."

"Well, Caitlin is having to get used to working with new people. I don't think she likes it. She doesn't like change so much, either," he said as if they did have something in common.

  4. First things first: Dylan used to be Hannah?! I had no idea! That certainly adds an interesting character layer. It makes me wonder what else I'll learn if I go back to the beginning of this blog. Like the last chapter, this one also has a thought-provoking ending: ' "Well, Caitlin is having to get used to working with new people. I don't think she likes it. She doesn't like change so much, either," he said as if they did have something in common." It's so easy for people, especially enemies (or frenemies or what have you) to focus on what separates them. But Deano's comment shows that we're not so different after all, Tori and Caitlin included. At the very least, as he says, no one likes change!

    1. We just know Dylan as "He" is now but Hannah was Caitlin's best friend. Although, many readers a few months back wanted Caitlin to be with Melvin instead of Dylan. It's interesting to see how this has evolved.

  5. Change is an inevitable fact of the life. Noone likes change or changes. But Caitlin's stuation is different. I think her life style or life discipline is different and she accepts changes hardly.

  7. Deano and Caitlin make for an interesting pair. I can understand them not wanting change. Sweet of Deano to offer that sewing machine to someone who might use it.
