"I was afraid, you were upset with me," Hope's voice sounded a little weak. Frankie winced when he heard her on the phone. He never got calls anymore.
It was so quiet at his place. When the phone rang he thought it might be the alarm. Of course, he knew she wouldn't want to hear something random like that, but he did want to talk.
"Oh, no, I'm sorry," he found himself saying, happy that she had called. He was feeling so melancholy. "I just wasn't sure-" He didn't know how to explain it. He dropped to his peaceful white couch and decided it was best to tell her the truth. "I saw someone I..I used to know. She was there."
"What? You mean the girl who used to be in my room?"
"Yeah, I..I didn't know."
"Seriously?" Hope sounded curious.
"I didn't want her to see me there at the hospital with you," Frankie confessed. "I mean, maybe..maybe if she'd seen me with you..then.." He tried to smile. "I would have been happy if she thought I was there with you. It's just..I thought..she would think I was spying."
"You? A spy?" He could hear Hope's smile over the phone. It made him smile. He was so glad she called.
"How are you feeling?" He quickly asked, wanting to leave the whole Tori problem behind him.
"I'm OK. Everything is good." Her voice was sweet and he wished he didn't have to go, but the phone call would come to an end, sooner or later.
"You know, if..if you need anything-"
"You've done so much already," Hope told him.
"No, I haven't." There was a bit of laughter in his voice, maybe he was nervous.
"You are so nice to me," Hope started and he was waiting for the but.
"But what?"
"I don't know if I can ever repay you," she said.
"I don't want you to repay me." Frankie pressed his lips tight.
"But..but I was such a fool," she told him. "How could I have let myself run away with a loser like that." She told him how she now thought her ex kidnapped his toddler son and he needed her to help him. "If..if I'd only known, I would have never."
"It was a good thing you were there," Frankie reminded her that she was a good person. She was kind and sincere. Maybe some would find her boring, but he didn't. He really thought Hope was an amazing person.
Hope is kind.

ReplyDeleteThese two both have a lot to work through, but they're lucky to have each other. I love the way you sum this chapter up: ' "It was a good thing you were there," Frankie reminded her that she was a good person. She was kind and sincere. Maybe some would find her boring, but he didn't. He really thought Hope was an amazing person." Frankie gets Hope. What more can a girl want?
