Megan didn't know exactly what Frankie was getting at. In the pit of her stomach, she knew it was bad news. Horrible news about Melvin. But then again, maybe she was overthinking. Cori always told her she overthought a lot. Like letting him have the pink scooter for transportation. She thought he'd get in an accident every day.
"What are you talking about?" She winced a frown. No way could anything awful happen to Melvin. They would have known. Somebody would have called, left a message even a letter. Her heart ached at the thought that Melvin was no longer with them. Impossible. Completely. She wanted to scream in the phone.
She looked around at the empty apartment just as a knock came on her door. Just what she needed. Someone at her door. A part of her felt she was losing her sanity. Maybe she'd faint and be left on the floor with Frankie saying over and over, "Hello!"
But she reached the door with the phone near her ear. She wanted more facts. Frankie needed to look into this. When had this happened? Where was he now? Still, she felt as if something knocked the air out her. Hopefully, it was Melvin at the door. He'd say he'd been on a vacation and forgot to tell everyone. He'd been playing golf out in Arizona. Yeah, this was something she could believe not this MIA story of Frankie's.
Only it wasn't Melvin at the door, but a stranger. Megan pressed her lips tight, she wanted to slam the door in the dark-haired guy's face. But she stared at him, almost in tears.
"Is Caitlin home?"
The question stung Megan deep. Before she knew it, he was already in. But she hadn't answered him, and she'd clicked off Frankie in mid-sentence.
"Why?" She wasn't sure if the question was actually for him.
"I'm her brother, Mario," he told her.
"Mario?" She winced. Caitlin never mentioned a brother named Mario.
He kind of smiled. "Yeah, it doesn't fit me, does it?" He mentioned his father's favorite video game was Mario brothers.
Honestly, Megan didn't have time for a fun family story. Not when she was worried about Melvin.
"I'll make some coffee," she said with a nod as she went to text Caitlin about the Mario matter. Yet, she felt a bit shakey now as she told him Caitlin didn't live here anymore, but she'd see if she'd come over.
