two dreamers

"You can hold her," Hope said to Tori. "It'll be OK."

Tori shook her head, no. It was like the couch was her island with all her scraps of yarn about. There was hardly a place for Hope to sit. She doubted Tori ever let Dylan near. In her heart, Hope felt it sinking. She felt so sad for Tori. She wanted to ask if she'd been taking her shots, was she doing her steps, was she loving herself at all?

"You need to try." Hope pressed her lips tight. "You'll have to hold  your baby one day."

"But what if it's dead." She sounded like a dark ghost who'd seen the future. She was dead serious.

Hope only cleared her throat, thinking Tori was on the wrong track somehow. Hope put sleeping Jewel back in her carrier. Honestly, Tori was giving her the chills.

"I'm sorry I haven't been around enough," Hope then said. "But will you be OK around me with baby Jewel?"

"Eventually." Although, Hope hardly heard her. "Really, I don't mean to be this way." It was as if Tori knew she was broken, perhaps even shattered.

"Your hair looks nice," Hope managed a smile. She didn't want to tell Tori how much of her own hair fell out giving birth to the baby. It might scare her. "It's getting so long."

"Dylan trims it." Her words were monotone.

Thankfully, Tori's hats weren't spiders or other dark matters. They were summer pastels and kind of beachy looking.

"These are nice," Hope grabbed one of the sloppy hats and put it on her head. "How much?"

"Oh, you can have it." Tori crossed her arms across her big belly.

"Seriously, you have to start a shop," Hope told her how easy it would be on one of the online platforms she loved to shop from.

"I don't use a pattern." Tori's words were dull. Seriously, Hope thought Tori needed to be under observation. But she didn't know how to explain this to either Dylan nor Kyle. All she could do was drink the mint herbal tea and snack on a snickerdoodle.

  1. I think there are conversation topics that are difficult to talk about. I hope they will be more open with time

  5. I think Hope is right. Tori sounds depressed in the medical sense of the world and like she is in need of professional help.
Hope is so nice to her.
I think Tori is a good person but broken inside.

  8. Way to get into the weeds with Tori. And Hope, whose last line/thought/action expresses the hopelessness of Tori's situation: "All she could do was drink the mint herbal tea and snack on a snickerdoodle." Your imagery is so stirring: the couch that's an island, Tori as a ghost, even the hats that aren't spiders or other dark matters. You make Tori so real and for us to want her to get well.
