Cyrus really was happy at Cori and Megan's. If only he didn't live down the hall.
"But it's your place. It's like you live at our place too because you are only down the hall." Megan explained more than once.
Cyrus only smiled with a nod. Maybe she was right. He did like having his own place. It was different here. He was certain he would have fallen apart by now, but he'd promised his grandmother he wouldn't. Although, he felt a little heartbroken without her. He did his best not to let it show.
Megan's Sloppy Joes were good, but not as great as his grandmother's.
"Can you ask for her recipe next time," Cyrus smile was even. He was doing his best to keep calm.
"Sure, I'd like that," Megan smiled back. There was something sweet about her, yet he wasn't sure what it was, but it was good to know her. He trusted her.
"You can watch some TV with us after we eat," she said.
He only nodded. He'd like that. He missed watching TV with her (his grandmother), but she hadn't called. It hurt to think about it. He focused on the tots instead. Dipping each one very delicately in the ketchup. He found himself eating one after another practically at warped speed.
"What about the sloppy joe?" Cori then asked.
Cryus smiled with a nod and went back to the sandwich. He ate a carrot too. Really, he didn't like vegetables. He asked if he could have an apple to take back to his room, but when Megan looked at Cori, Cyrus wondered if he was in serious trouble. It was as if they were taking care of a three-year-old.
"Why don't you eat it here after dinner. You could eat it while you watch TV," Cori told him. Soon enough, as they sat down at the couch Megan brought him a sliced apple.
"I can actually eat a whole apple," Cyrus winced as if maybe she did think he was a baby.
"I know," she smiled ever so endearing. "but I like slicing it up for you."
It looks like eating stress :)

ReplyDeletePoor Cyrus. I like that he's settling in a little with Megan and Cori, but it's clear he has a long way to go. Still, as you said in your last comment, we're all a little odd -- and go at our own pace. I'm not sure it even matters if Cyrus is labeled as autistic or not; what matters is that he has special needs and that those needs are met. Megan seems like she's up to the task. It's sweet when she tells Cyrus that she likes slicing his apple for him. Cyrus is lucky to have her.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your friend in PA with COVID. I hope he/she gets through it okay. It seems like every day my parents are telling me about yet another person we know, some vaccinated some not, who has it. It's extremely disheartening.
I love your dialogues. Cyrus is a nice character.
