Oh, Bea would not give up. She couldn't. Not yet. But then again, maybe she didn't want the doll either. Especially, when Frankie handed her over a bank card with a hefty sum of money. Her heart only beat faster, yet she knew she couldn't take it, could she? She pressed her lips tight as she held it in her hand. She forced herself to shake her head, no.
"You keep it."
"You said she was expensive. She's a Suzy Bai knock-off, for God's sakes." His face tensed as if he needed to support her somehow.
"Then..then you invest it for me." Yes, she was a working woman. She'd worked all her life and had nothing to actually show for it. As long Marcus was in her life, he'd drain her dry.
"What?" He was a bit pessimistic.
She knew Frankie had money just from the way he dressed and the things he accumulated. She'd never met anyone like him. And still, they'd been such good friends over the phone.
"Oh, you probably even met Mr. Buffet," She wasn't joking. Frankie only sighed and put the bank card back in his wallet.
"I know..I know I probably shouldn't be here. You keep that fuck'n doll. I don't want it." Bea was still in tears as she broke down, telling him what a fool she was and she was sorry.
Frankie only stared at her as if maybe this was her new kind of standup routine, but it wasn't an act. True, she was an emotional wreck.
"Things have not been good for me, for a long time," Bea pressed her lips tight. She couldn't bear to look at him.
Finally, Frankie sat down on the other side of the couch.
"Yes, meeting you was a distraction." She nodded, thinking this was possibly an addiction. "But..but I'm not crazy. I wasn't out to hurt you."
Still, Frankie was even lipped. He only stared at her as if he might be staring at the wall.
"I'm not gonna lie," he told her. "I liked what we had."
"Oh, you just wanted Suzy Bai." Bea was in a pout.
Frankie only sighed.
"No." He winced. "I just liked that you were actually listening to me."
"Listening to you?" She gave him a hard look. "You're the one with the big fan club. You had plenty who would listen to you."
He almost smiled. "I don't see it that way." Frankie sighed. "I was just there to be a good listener."
Bea nodded, but she doubted he would ever listen to her.

ReplyDeleteI was wondering when Frankie and Bea would get to the core of their issues, and your dialogue doesn't disappoint:

There's a lot of hurt and mistrust between these two, but maybe they can still be friends. Bea sounds like she's had a rough go of it, what with Marcus bleeding her dry. Also, it's funny how the sex doll is a high-end model, worth enough money to invest. I always love your humor!
Your comment about the raccoons caught my attention: "Someone told me while he was out bird hunting once he heard a tree crack and out came a family of raccoons." That sounds like a cartoon! A raccoon cartoon, LOL. My sister recently had a raccoon living in her fireplace, and it caused a flea infestation (they don't have pets). It was a whole thing. Ugh, wildlife!
Very innocent human behaviour happened between Bea and Frankie. Hope they improve it.
ReplyDeleteI like how much we got to know about Frankie. He's a really well-fleshed-out character.
