The first day with Cyrus was pure hell. Honestly, Pixie wasn't sure she knew if she could work with his barista skills..which were none. After all, she had to run the cash register and take the orders.
"Look, you have to do something," she couldn't believe she said it, but she was too tired not to. He was completely wrong for the job. He wasn't exactly inclined to run machines. Evidently.
"What do you mean?" He did do the dishes and he cleaned up, kind of.
"You have to pick up the pace." She pressed her lips tight.
"Pick up the pace," he nodded.
"That means when I give you an order you have to follow the recipes. Measure stuff out and get the machine going." It was getting colder and people were wanting warmer drinks. Thankfully, mocha and peppermint were phasing out pumpkin spice.
"I just don't like these machines," He made a face as if the machines had something against him. "I talk to them nicely but they still mess up."
Pixie found herself laughing. "You really talk to the machines?"
"Of course, I do."
"Maybe you need to hang around with the next crew and just watch, OK?" She shrugged.
"OK, you'll watch too?" He wanted to know.
"Of course."
Cyrus looked so sad as he put his hands on his hips. "I'm sorry I'm putting you through this."
"No, I know..." she didn't really know what to say.
"Roman said you'd want me to be here," he looked at her but he wasn't smiling. "He's afraid you might run away with the next guy who works here...so..so he thought it should be me..you know, if you were going to try to run away."
"What?" Pixie winced a smile. "What have you two been talking about?"
"Mostly about you."
"Maybe he said all that because..because..he's the one who wants to run away." She had an itch on her back and before she knew it he was scratching it ever so carefully.
"I wish we had better jobs," Cyrus then said.
"Maybe some day." Pixie had her back turned from him. Finally, the new shift arrived. It was time to learn something. Pixie thought she should take notes.
very good dialoge
ReplyDeleteThank you so much❤

DeleteHopefully better jobs someday
ReplyDeletePoor Cyrus. The first day on a new job is always hard. It must be hard on Pixie too because she has to work for two of them, at least until he learns more. I hope it works out in the end. Interesting title. I think the best power couple is the one where people give power to one another, treat one another with respect. That's more important that worldly success and power. Just occurred to me that is probably what people typically mean when they say power couple. a couple of two successful people. However, there are more ways to be successful. Lovely chapter.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for your comment! "I think the best power couple is the one where people give power to one another, treat one another with respect. That's more important that worldly success and power. " I like your definition!

Sometimes talking to the machines helps ... I know something about this.
ReplyDeleteThis title is so good: Not exactly a power couple. Working together has forced Pixie and Cyrus's relationship into a whole new and unfortunately unwelcome dynamic. Seeing Cyrus suffer through dealing with machines (although I love that he talks to them) and the rest definitely makes Pixie realize his issues more clearly. Which, in a way, is good because now she knows how much help Cyrus needs. If these two can make it through the coffee rush, then perhaps they can make it through anything . . .
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked the title. Of course, I talk to machines too..I fight with my printer at work, daily. It's good Pixie is seeing all his colors...=)
