Nonnie thought she might drop to the floor when Cori announced she would be taking over as the night manager at the pizzeria.
"But I couldn't," she didn't understand. Cyrus had been here forever and this Ali girl who couldn't be a girl she knew subconsciously but she went along with it anyway had been here for some time too. "I just..I just started."
"But you've been in fast food for so long," Cori explained. This was true, but to be in charge well how had that happened? "You're doing so good. And we really need you."
She nodded as if she'd have to. Evidently. Oh, and there was that raise too. But it was so crazy.
"You like the team, don't you?" Cori wanted to know if she'd had any problems.
Well, of course, she thought that Ali kid was a little lazy and to have taken so much time off made her a bit peeved. Really, they'd been seriously short on staff since Nonnie got here. The delivery guy Diago had been helping out recently. She wished he was on staff. But she hated to ask. She would try to make it work. She knew he didn't like to actually have to make pizza.
"We'll make it work," she found herself saying. Although, a part of her wished she was still working with Weezer. Honestly, he always made her feel safe.
Of course, there was always that crazy dream of hers of an active shooter showing up and Weezer taking control of the situation. She had no one like that on the night crew. Cyrus was nice enough, but he didn't seem to really know anything other than maybe a question from Jeopardy on occasion. Yes, he'd already asked her to go the pub with them on Monday nights when the pizzeria closed early.
She told him she wasn't that good at games. It gave her anxieties. "But, you wouldn't have to know all the answers." He reminded her they had a team. Just like this team, evidently. Everyone had their part. Nonnie just had to make sure everyone was doing their job. Oh, and then came customer service. Had anyone really thought about that lately?
Of course, just when she thought she could get used to this new situation, Weezer had to show up.
You really know how to write! :) I wish you a good day.

ReplyDeleteIt's so weird that Nonnie thinks of Cyrus as having been at the pizza place forever -- because I feel like he just got there! But everything's relative, and she's right. "Just a nice guy" or not, Cyrus has come a long way from his fumbling beginnings. Then again, this installment isn't about Cyrus (even if I always make it about him!). Nonnie faces a big challenge managing the pizza place -- especially considering her dream (nightmare?) of Weezer saving her from an active shooter. Chilling stuff. I hope it's not foreshadowing -- or if it is, then that Weezer saves the day after all. 🍕
