I'll wait up for you

Mona thought it was a long time coming. It was kind of funny how they went round and round about making it official. Well, she guessed that's what it was.

Although, it just happened when she was with Tristan. There were no long rules and regulations. Mona wouldn't be surprised if Nick didn't pull out a notebook of some kind about this. Nic and Mona's Big Book of Romance.

Oh, there was a list of places of to go and things to do. Of course, in Mona's head it was a much rather R-Rated version while Nic couldn't get past a G-rated version. What was wrong with him?

"Why can't we do this?" She finally fretted about intercourse. She looked over his shoulder. The bed was waiting. Of course, she was in a sexy top and she could easily get out of the sleep pants. She wasn't even wearing underwear.

"Aren't you cold," he looked surprised, changing the subject.

"Oh, don't you know I'm hot for you?" She smirked and then realized it would have even been a bad joke on SNL. She sighed. God, he was going to talk her out of this. Again. Why wasn't this working out?

He sat at the edge of the bed still in his jeans, buckled up. He even wore a tee under his sweater. Lord, it would be a puzzle just getting him undressed.

"I dunno what's scaring you." She felt sad to say it, but it had to be said as she sat next to him. He was quiet. She nudged him with her shoulder. Still nothing.

Finally, he admitted, "I don't think I'm really good at anything."

"What!" She practically screeched.

"You're great!" She snapped ready to shake this glum out of him. "You do so many things for other people. You're super nice and the sweetest."

She looked at him resting his chin on his fist. He fidgetted a bit as his knee wavered, looking back at her,  hesitating.

"I don't see that person you see," Nic squinted. "I haven't accomplished much." He was even-lipped. "I'm just-" He shook his head as he nursed his bottom lip. "I feel like I get in the way."

"In the way of what?" She was furious with him. Of all the times to bring something up like this? It was like he wanted to be a big turn-off. "You were the one who kept that toy drive going. You got in there and worked a whole lot more than whoever was running the thing. What are you saying?"

"Well-" He sighed, looking away, frowning even more.

"Look, I know I've waited all my life to be with someone like you," she told him as she hugged herself. "I don't want any more excuses. My gut or maybe it's my heart, too..are telling me..you're the one."

He wouldn't look at her though.

"My grandmother Wonda always said I was a lot like her first husband. He was a wander. He never could find that career they were hoping he'd find. He liked dogs. He herded sheep when he was growing up, but it was not enough. Not even working as a ranch hand. Besides, she didn't want to be married to a ranch hand." He pressed his lips tight. "Finally, he went into the army, but..but he got killed."

Damn, if he just couldn't make this most depressing night ever. She wasn't going to ask any more questions. Mona reached for his chin and pulled him to her.

She looked him right in the eye. This would not do. She kissed him hard, as if maybe she was Wonda on her last night with her man before the war came.

  2. Sheesh, Nic, way to kill the mood! He has some serious self esteem issues. I like that Mona takes control at the end, kissing him as if he's going off to war.
