"Are you sure you two aren't related?" Woojin asked Liv as soon as Nic and Felicity left. It felt as if they'd been here for hours. Liv was so afraid Nic would figure out, that there was no extra room. She was famished and in dire need of coffee. Of course, Woo made her a pour-over. And she put in extra milk. After all, she might as well make it a meal.
"I told you about her, already," Liv glared at him as if she was ready to get out her app and talk nonstop into it so Woo could hear it in Korean. She was not related to Felicity.
"I know." He was serious, "But it's weird."
"Weird." She agreed. He got out the spam to make her an egg sandwich.
"But she wants to help you," Woo said as he sliced up the spam rectangles and put them in a sizzling skillet.
"I hope so," Liv was even-lipped about the job matter. "Maybe, maybe I could.I dunno..be a nanny."
Woo shook his head, no. He didn't like the idea. He might never see her again. "You need to be in a mask."
"What?" She wrinkled her nose. He spoke into the app in Korean and then she laughed. "The masses."
Of course, he didn't think it was so funny. He served up the fried egg on toast and SPAM. She wanted cheese, but she didn't ask. She was hungry and maybe kind of bewildered. What had she just done? Found her a place that wasn't at Nic's.
She did have mixed feelings. "This was the right thing to do, right?" She then asked, even if it was a question mostly to herself.
"What?"
"What should we do today?" She wanted to know.
"I have off today," Woo nodded. His niece was still out. He didn't mention much about her. She was barely in high school She'd stayed over at a friend's after school.
"How will she feel about me staying here?" Liv said as she was about to finish up with the sandwich.
"I'm sure she'll be fine." He shrugged still in the middle of his sandwich.
Liv doubted that. She wouldn't be too happy if someone just moved in while she was out.
"What is this?" Sunny asked in her native tongue and slammed down her books on the kitchen counter. This couldn't be happening, she thought as she unloaded her stuff and took off her heavy coat.
Who was this foreigner? She looked at her uncle in disgust. Of course, Woojin had always been more like a brother to her than an uncle. Yet, he'd practically raised her too.
"You know, you always told me I needed someone, before it was too late," Woojin bit back in Korean. Still, he was being closed lip. Just watching him around this foreigner was like watching a love-sick puppy.
"But..but..you don't even know her?" She'd been discussing with her mom who was abroad about some matchmaking for Woo. Her mom kept saying it would be too much money and it wouldn't be worth it. She always said Woo had to figure this out on his own.
Her frown was a small circle. She wanted it to be different for Woo. All this studying just to make others study. She looked down. Not a glance at this girl. She would have nothing to do with her. Ever. She stomped off to her room and slammed the door shut.
Sunny hadn't had time to take off her shoes like usual. She was just angry. Sunny slipped off her sneakers and fell to her bed.
She couldn't stay furious with him. He was her only family now. After all, her dad was supposedly American. Although, her mom never said a thing about him. Would it be the same way with Woo? Just a fling and then something as clinical as staring at a bare ceiling.
Soon enough, Woo tapped on the door to bring her books and backpack.
"Come on, you must be hungry. You only eat at home," Woo said. Yes, he knew her best. She had her secret regiment. She didn't even eat at the coffee shop where she worked. She smelled the spam cooking and an egg was already in the pan.
Sunny couldn't smile, watching that American in their kitchen. But she did make a really good egg sandwich. Sunny was hungry.
"You know, Liv's never had a real eggroll," Woo said while she was eating.
"What?" She laughed. She knew how Woo felt about her eggrolls. She caught herself smiling as she looked over at Liv. Oh, she would make a spicy one. She bet that American girl couldn't handle it.
Haha

ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on yourself about the writer's club. Life is demanding, and no one can do it all. Anyway, you're writing here, and that's what matters. 😀📓😀📓😀📓
