As it was

It felt as if the worst was to come, and yet Carmen felt good to be in a new space with Kenny. They both had their own rooms. They weren't sharing her room. Honestly, in her heart, she felt Kenny would always be hers and she would hate for them to be apart.

Pat said this was the room her daughter used to have, but she was in Seoul. It was erased of any traces of who had been here before.

"Yeah, I did a lot of cleaning, first thing," she told Carmen as she put her things away in her new room while Kenny stayed in Pat's other room where her son used to live.

Of course, they didn't have much after the house fire. It was difficult to talk about what had happened in the down spiral of things. Carmen wished she'd paid attention more. It was if she'd lived in a home full of strangers. She didn't think her mother would leave her father. But her mother had been seeing someone from the casino and they left for Vegas a few days before Christmas.

She should of known her dad would have gone a little crazy, but she didn't think he would go this far. She kept telling herself he wasn't in his right mind. Of course, maybe her mother knew he hadn't been in his right mind for a long time.

Yet it hurt the most that her mom could turn her back on them. She didn't look for her mother to come back. Even if she did, Carmen was certain she and Kenny would be staying right here.

"You don't think they'd move us again, do you?" This was what loomed over her new start of the year.

"I don't think so," Pat told her. Kenny would be going to the same school. She would drop him off and pick him up after school. It was like she was Kenny's new bodyguard.

On the other hand, Carmen had Rico who was a constant reminder that he was there for her. All along the emotion of a sad heart sank in that this was going to be her future. Funny, it was much more secure than the home she came from which was always full of loud words which made her flinch just at the thought of what had been said.

The quietness was so hard to get used to, and then she found she could sleep in peace. Little by little she knew it was good to be here. She hoped the new year would bring good things instead resless dreams.

  2. I hope it brings good things for her. They've been through a lot- the mom leaving, the fire. Loud words can leave an impact on kids...

  4. Sad. Carmen comes from a broken family. Perhaps Rico, and the school boy Kenny, will somehow make it up for for her troubled past.

  7. I'm glad that Carmen's settling into her new life, even if it isn't perfect. She has a healthy way of looking at things:
