"Shit, shit..shit," Vada hoped no one could hear her as she waited patiently for Sammie to pick up, but Vada's mobile kept ringing. Forever.
She looked around at the empty spaces she needed to fill at the art gallery. It had fallen on her to take care of the Ukraine art fundraiser. She was to showcase the photography and artworks of University students who were raising money for their country back home.
Still, Sammie would not pick up. Vada swelled a frown when she clicked off the phone before it went to voicemail. Vada hugged herself hard. Her feet hurt in the black high heels. Of course, she looked full of confidence in the outfit that Sammie redid to make it look a bit retro in a classic sort of way.
Finally, the phone rang. Vada felt so alone. Her stomach grumbled. Yes, she thought she might shit her panties yet or starve a few more pounds off.
"Sammie!" Vada knew she sounded demanding. She wanted to pull her hair out from all this distress. She needed to get out of these shoes. Of course, she gave Sammie an earful about her predicament.
"Oh, you've got people. You always know how to tell people what to do."
"No, I don't." Vada squinted. Was she really like that?
"Take a breath. Lay all the framed work on the floor and piece it together, like..I dunno a quilt of some kind. Start with a big piece. Add a few that aren't so big. You'll find a pattern." Sammie said she couldn't get away. She did have her afternoon of babysitting. What was Vada expecting? Sammie showing up with a baby latched at her hip. "You can do this. I've seen how great you are at this kind of thing. You'll do fine."
But Vada didn't feel fine. She hated this pressure. She knew if she ate it would be a nervous frenzy. No telling what she might find to eat. Nothing but carbs, she suspected.
"You have a staff at your fingertip. Just do it." Sammie's final words.
Vada looked around. She felt as if she might as well be in outer space as she looked around at the gray walls. It was then she knew she had to think like Sammie. What would Sammie do?
You have a way of making the dialogues sound very natural. Lovely chapter.

ReplyDeleteI like that Sammie is there for Vada. I hope she will be there for Sammie too.
ReplyDeleteVada knew 'she had to think like Sammie'. Sammie encouraged her over the phone, advising her what and how to do things with the Ukrainian art show.
ReplyDeletePoor Vada! Being in charge of an art fundraiser does indeed sound stressful. I love that Sammie gives her such good advice -- not to mention an awesome outfit! -- that she can lean on when she's alone. Hopefully it'll all work out. 🎨💙🎨💙🎨💙
