"Why? Why is she like this?"
All this wailing from Trish was making breakfast harder to complete. Carmen practically cringed. She wasn't sure how much more she could take, but she handed off the spatula to Justin to take care of the scrambled eggs. She was just going to let Trish vent about Liv having her baby.
Carmen found refuge on the couch with her warm cup of coffee. She closed her eyes as Trish went over once more how Liv was so livid about them being there. "How could she? What did I do that was so wrong?"
"Try not to think about it. It won't help. You have to calm down. You need to be there for Liv and the baby."
Carmen took a chance on her words, and Trish quietened.
"It's just-" Carmen could hear the sadness.
"Hey, you haven't even asked about Kenny," Carmen replied.
"Kenny? Is he sick?"
"No, but he misses you. Misses your BLTs you make him every morning."
Carmen found herself telling her about Kenny and all his sports activities. He was in summer school already, but that would only last three weeks, and hopefully Trish would return home before then.
"I don't even know why I'm here," Trish snapped.
"Oh, you know why you are there. It's gonna be OK. You'll get to hold baby Oliver soon," Carmen did her best to keep a soothing tone, hoping Trish would believe her.
"Why would they name that baby Oliver? Just why?"
"We don't have to know why." Carmen cut in.
"This is Liv's time, you have to think of her and Woo, and the baby. You can be happy, and you know it."
Carmen had things to do. There were more clothes to wash, places to go, but she was glad Kenny was here with her, and Justin had stepped up, too. Randy and Jared kept the place tidy. Maybe they would all go to the pool today. It was warming up.
Trish sighed heavily.
"You are taking all your medications, aren't you?"
"Yes."
Carmen knew Trish hated to be reminded, but chances were she'd forgotten.
"I love you, Mom."
Carmen felt a lump of emotion lodge in her throat. Now Trish broke down in tears. "I love you both so much. Tell Kenny I love him. Send me some pics."
"I will," Carmen promised.
Awww good job Carmen keeping her calm. Or calming her.

ReplyDeleteTrish is a bit too sensitive...the question is why? It's not her baby...they can name their baby any name they want, can't they?

ReplyDeleteAww... all the love at play in this story is so sweet!
ReplyDeleteWho knows (maybe the author)... baby names might evolve as the babies and their personalities grow evolve and develop... ?
That blue dress in the photo-collage above looks very feminine and pretty.... I love it..
Nothing like a cup of coffee and a couch to feel better
