Deano was slicing pizza down at the pizzeria when he heard a familiar voice, and it wasn't Caitlin. He turned to see Bren, a face he hadn't seen in ages. They knew each other before middle school. They'd lived on the same block. She was one who enjoyed sneaking out and at times he followed her into worlds he'd just soon forget about.
"I was wondering where I'd find you?" As always her smile was dazzling but she could be the meanest when she wanted to. She was pregnant now, as in about to pop. He squinted thinking he better give her a deal because she was always looking for one.
"How's it going?" Really, he didn't know much about her now.
"Just waiting, you know." She then mentioned her boyfriend Brad was in Vancouver doing a show, or maybe waiting to do a show. She wasn't sure anymore. "How about you, you seeing anyone?"
He nodded thinking he shouldn't mention Caitlin because sometimes Bren could be, well so Bren. But he did.
"Caitlin!" It set her off. Thankfully, they were the only two in the building at the moment. "That skank, Brad used to see?" Oh, she could be a tigress.
"Wait, um..lets don't get so worked up," Deano grinned. Unsure how to calm her down. He quickly handed her a cup of Dr. Pepper. He knew that was her favorite. "I don't think she's that Caitlin." Although, Caitlin told him everything about everyone she used to be with. He recalled there was Brad the dancer, who evidently was with Bren now.
"She's a crackhead, you know," Bren was determined to vent as much as she could about Brad's ex.
"Wait, I don't think..we..should go that far," Deano felt he needed to defend Caitlin. His sad eyes looked at his childhood friend. In fact, they'd both tried crack once in middle school. The night they met a drifter close to the railroad tracks. He'd offered them a try on a cold winter's night. Both were left a little dumbfounded. The stranger told him he was the Son of Satan and walked right in front of a moving train. Deano thought he'd forgotten about it. They ran home, never to speak a word of it.
He hoped Caitlin never crossed her path or Bren might go off the deep end. He got Bren sat down at a table and brought her a slice of cheese pizza with some hot pickled peppers on the side. Maybe all she needed was to eat.

Pizza looks great and makes them calm down.
ReplyDeleteWow, trouble on the horizon! Just when I think these relationships can't get more complicated, you prove me wrong! Bren seems awful and definitely threatened by Caitlin. I feel sorry for Deano having to deal with both Bren and the dark memories between them.
