Cori guessed he was a mess. He just didn't know what to say. All he really wanted was to keep the pizzeria going. But he thought they should be closed for a short vacation. He hated to let the employees down, but he needed to figure out what was going on too. He just left out the Melvin part for the moment.
"It's the right thing to do," Megan told him over the phone as he rummaged in Melvin's office for phone numbers. Anything that might be a connection to New Jersey. Of course, they would be the last to know. But there were still supplies and Melvin did own the building. Lord knows, who it would own it next. He had no idea what he was really supposed to do.
Of course, it was the matter of losing Melvin that hit him the hardest. What could he say... he loved and hated the guy. It was the perfect work relationship. A lot of times, he knew Melvin could care less about this place. Melvin was no cook.
Cori needed to face the fact that Melvin was a wanna-be rock star who was actually just a pothead. But Cori had worked for him and he was like a family he never had. There was a certain kindness about Melvin. But there was a dark side to him too.
He was still weirded out about the whole Tori thing. How could that have happened? And now she was pregnant. He could hardly imagine how hard it was for her. But the world was complex. It was as if two worlds were always colliding.
Of course, he couldn't get a hold of Wade. Cori checked on Melvin's place. It looked ransacked by the looks of things. Cori found himself wandering around, not sure what to do. There were so few clues.
None of this was his. He was no one to Melvin's family. Still, he felt so overwhelmed. What was he to say? How was he going to live? Suddenly, he felt like he was right back where he started.
"You know, you're a good guy," he heard Melvin's voice behind him. He looked to see if he was there, but he wasn't. "You're better than me. You always have been. You'll know how to make it work."
But Cori didn't think so. He shook his head, no.
"Just wait and see, bro." Melvin's words melted through him. He missed him. After all, Melvin was the big brother he never had.

💔😘
how hard it is to lose someone like that... Melvin's gone, what to do?
DeleteI can see how writing about Melvin would be hard. But you do it so well, making him multi-dimensional: "There was a certain kindness about Melvin. But there was a dark side to him too." And I had no idea that he was inspired by Harry Styles! Although I guess I should've realized that one of the characters was, because of all the pictures. Anyway, that's so interesting. I love the idea of taking famous people, who we all feel like we know but really only know so much about, and building a whole new persona from (for?) them. It's so creative.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this chapter. How you explored the sentiments of both your characters, thus making them both likeable.
