Winter is coming

Cori woke up to a bloody forest in his eye. At first, he thought it might be a dream. Or was he just seeing hair in his eyes, or was it roots of some kind? He couldn't even say which eye it was in. He got to the bathroom and grabbed a washcloth to put under some warm water. He covered his eyes with it and instantly, it felt as if he should just lay back down and sleep, but when he removed the cloth and he saw black dots. Everywhere. He shook his head. This couldn't be happening. Was he going blind?

Cyrus was to be here today. That would mean going to the airport. Entertaining him. The timing couldn't be worse. All the while, he kept rubbing his eyes and the black dots dispersed and became smaller until they were gone.

"What's wrong?" Megan asked who was right there all the while. Of course, she'd been quiet and he hadn't really noticed her until now.

"It's probably nothing." Cori did his best to explain to her the scenario. She looked at him funny as if this couldn't be good.

"We have to get this checked out."

"I don't have time to go to the ER." He festered a frown as if that was out of the question.

"I'm making an appointment right now." She had her phone in hand and called his doctor who covered his rather lame insurance. Luckily, they could get in before eight a.m. if they hurried.

Cori sighed as if he didn't need this. Not today.

"You need to get checked out, when's the last time you've had a checkup?" Megan wanted to know.

He only sighed. He didn't want to talk about it. After all, he believed in taking care of himself. He wasn't into alcohol and he really didn't even eat pizza anymore. Still, this baffled him, too. Of course, Megan was talking about blood work and a real physical.

"That has nothing to do with my eye." He snapped.

  1. I love how Megan is always trying to care of everyone. Anyway, I think Cori should listen to Megan, do bloodwork and see what's up.

  4. This is scary right from the get-go: "Cori woke up to a bloody forest in his eye." Way to write some fierce imagery! I thought, COVID-induced pink eye. But then, as things unraveled and I learned that Cyrus was coming, I wasn't so sure. And when Cori told Megan that it had nothing to do with his eye, I thought, oh, maybe this is a stress-induced thing. I'm very interested to see how this one plays out. On another note, I was impressed that Cori barely eats pizza. How could he resist, being around it 24/7? Or maybe that's the problem. Anyway, pizza's my favorite food! I could eat it every day (although I usually eat boring old chicken).

  5. Hope it's takeigo. Sometimes it is not enough just to eat right and be active, the disease comes when you least expect it.

  7. Nossa... O Cori é igual a maioria dos homens que não gostam de ir a médico e consultas de saúde...

  9. ¡This chapter was incredible! The tense dynamic you established between these characters really makes this such a likeable read.
