saying the right thing

 "Oh, he's so cute!" Megan was thrilled to finally meet baby Soren. His eyes were so alert and it was as if nothing really bothered him. It was as if he was ready to study the world. She didn't dare touch his tiny fingers. Actually, she was on the brink of tears, but they were of joy. He weighed seven pounds and it was the perfect weight in her arms.

"Are you really OK?" She looked at Tori resting on the couch with a pillow in her lap.

Tori nodded, but she didn't say anything.

"I can come and help if you want?" Megan hoped she wasn't sad. It was hard to say. Megan and Cori brought pizza and fresh fruit.

Finally, Tori gave her a quick smile and told her they were fine. "He seems to know what to do." She said he slept a lot and nursed a lot. "But he's kind of a night owl."

"Oh." Megan bit a grin. Really, this was all new to her. She was certain Tori must be tired and needed sleep. At least Dylan had off the next week or so. 

Megan went on to say she thought the name was beautiful. She wouldn't dare ask anything. After all, the baby was pure and needed love and happiness. She sensed it was that way in spite of what had happened. This was a new chapter.

She looked at Cori who was still in the kitchen area with Dylan. She wondered how it was when Cori was born. Had they left him in a cold dark room away from the world. How had he grown up to be the man he was with a mother who hated him. A lump of emotion seized her. She really did feel as if she might be coming down with something. Yet, she wasn't feverish.

Megan cleared her throat and asked if Hope had been by. Tori nodded. "And Frankie, too."

"Did they come together?" Megan hadn't meant to ask. 

"No, he dropped by first. The next day, Hope came with the baby. It was like she wanted Jewel to see her new friend." Tori's smile was open.

Megan only nodded. Yes, it was never too early to have friends.
