Oh, What a Holiday

"I don't know when we can all get together?" Eddie was a little glum that Paul was still in quartine, but he was glad they talk over the phone. There was so much he wanted to tell his closest friend about Roman, but he doubted Paul would be interested. They were exact opposites. It surprised him even now they were still friends, but they'd showed up at the hospital on the same day and somehow became automatic friends. They usually ate lunch together which meant at midnight at the hospital cafeteria. And now a one-night stand (but not with each other) had changed everything.

"We'll do something before Christmas," Paul assured him he wanted Eddie to meet LaLa. "She's kind of cold, but not really." There was laughter in Paul's voice.

"Well, you must know her well by now." Eddie smiled. It was interesting to talk of these new situations since neither had ever been in a real relationship. "Just how did you know?"

"Oh, I watch videos," Paul told him and then he laughed. "I'm not going tell you. All right." He paused but finally admitted he was drunk but not totally. "She knows things."

"Evidently," Eddie was glad Paul was happy.

"And you, what in the world came over the master of shyness?" Paul wanted to know.

"Paulie, don't make me sound like a guru," Eddie smiled. "It was just easy...I guess. I mean, I didn't know if I was even his type. Somethings just have to happen naturally." Eddie said he wasn't a very good actor. "I just imagined he'd find me stupid."

"But you're a virgin."

"Well so are you," Eddie shot back.

"Not anymore." Paul reminded him. Eddie only smiled. He knew he needed to get back to work. Someone in a wheelchair needed to be pushed somewhere.

"Oh Shit!" Caitlin looked at the stick one more time. Maybe she read it wrong. Maybe. Nope. She shivered, thinking how could that be? All of this was happening while Deano was on the phone with his brother.

"Are you kidding me!" She heard him say. Those two rarely ever talked over the phone. These days Deano barely got a text, but somehow something was going on.

Of course, Deano looked at her blankly when he got off the phone.

"What?" She wondered if he'd figured it out before she could even say.

"My brother got me on in finance at the bank," he said a little breathless.

"What's wrong with that?" She squinted as if that couldn't be bad news.

"I know.." he sighed, " I was just thinking how much I loved working at the pizza place. You know, it's like my second home."

"Well, you'll take it, won't you?" She looked at him that he better start being a full-timer and not just a college student waiting to get the classes he wanted.

Suddenly, Caitlin's stomach was nervous as if she might throw up on Deano. She scurried to the bathroom, dropping the pregnancy test on the floor.

Was this an early Christmas present or a New year's nightmare?

  4. So, Eddie and Paul and friends and recent virgins. I like that connection! And Eddie signing off because "Someone in a wheelchair needed to be pushed somewhere." is hilarious. The news about Caitlin is surprising. Pregnant! On the one hand, it's great that Deano just got that job offer at the bank. But on the other, he seems about as ready to take it as Caitlin is to become a mother. Your ending encapsulates it all perfectly: "Was this an early Christmas present or a New year's nightmare?"

I was so happy to see my cherry fabric under the words cherry bomb! So cool! The pregnancy test was a bomb indeed!
