just a foolish thought here and there

 

"Well, I hope you aren't making Deano do all the work around here," Caitlin's mother said. As it was Caitlin wasn't getting out of bed soon enough these days. She was still in her pajamas when her mother came over to say goodbye.

"What do you mean?" She was starving. Her boobs were aching. She couldn't even remember the last time she watched the news.

"Oh, you just don't get it," her mom said. "You two are a team and you both have to take care of your little one. It seems you expect a lot out of that husband of yours and you are running him ragged."

"Well..well, I'm tired," Caitlin didn't know what she was going on about. It wasn't  like she'd gone anywhere. She hadn't combed her hair in days and she did need a shower. Having a baby was exhausting. Or had her mom forgotten that?

"I know it's tiring, but it's a lot of give and take. Be nice to each other. He can't be here for every little call you make. He's been busy with that baby from the get-go." Her mother gave her the eye. "I'm beginning to wonder if you want to be a mother at all."

"What do  you mean?" Her mom always knew how to hurt her feelings.

"Get out of this bed. Tend to your daughter." Her mom told her she needed to hold the baby more.

"Well, I..I am." But mostly she used the breast pump and Deano did feed the baby at night. He was on call to do so because she needed her sleep. Of course, he spent a lot of nights in the nursery. She had no idea where he was sleeping.

"I came in this morning and he was flat out on the floor sleeping." Her mother didn't like the situation. "You need to do more."

Caitlin didn't want to think about that. Of course, Deano did all the cooking and cleaning. And she just wasn't the most loveable mother in the world. Obviously. But was it that big of a deal?

"Do you think you can be home alone, with Hannah?" Her mother then asked.

Caitlin winced hard. She didn't want to think about that. Of course, her mind still wondered. She was still wondering about Wade and what he knew about Melvin's death and whether he was Soren's father. Maybe she did like mysteries. Was she supposed to be thinking about the baby all the time?

"It's just-" She knew it would justify nothing. Evidently. "I'm so close to finding out the truth."

"The truth about what?" Her mother wanted to know. She pulled back the covers. "Go take a shower and then you start holding and talking to that baby of yours."

Caitlin knew she was right. Still, she was going to get to the bottom of this mystery about Wade. Oh, she hated him more than ever. All the while she knew she loved Hannah and she loved Deano for taking such great care of her.
