We hate it when our friends become successful

LaLa wasn't sure what she had in mind when she invited Bren over. Granted. Caitlin was busy so it was just Bren. Truly, it felt like an insult, but LaLa did her best to understand.

Yes, LaLa lived with her doctor now. They'd eloped in Vegas.

"That's all there is to know," LaLa offered Bren some wine but she said it was just too early in the day.

"What would Sammie think?" Bren told her they had a seventeen-year-old living with them now.

"Mario has a little sister?" Funny, LaLa imagined her name would end in O, kind of like Sandra Oh or something.

"She's still in high school," Bren said her parents were having some difficult times since all the stuff going on in California. "It's just temporary."

"Are you sure?" LaLa guessed Bren could probably handle it better than Mario. "Are you guys having fun?"

"She's very quiet," Bren sampled cheese and a grape. "She works a the pizza place."

"Um," LaLa didn't miss those days. It didn't feel so long ago when she waited tables.

"Roman told us, he and Eddie are getting married," Bren said.

"They haven't done that already?" It felt so yesterday, to LaLa. "He never calls, doesn't even text me." She made a face of disgust and walked away. Really, all she had was Bren and that felt like going through the drive-through. It was hardly a real deal. Not like with Mario and Paulie.

LaLa felt left out. Truly, nothing much had changed. Still, she knew she must have had it better than Bren. LaLa was in a new house and she didn't have unwanted company. Of course, she knew Bren would never admit that.

"As soon as it warms up, we'll have it on the rooftop," Bren said about Roman's wedding. She never talked about her wedding. LaLa wondered if it might never happen for Bren and Mario.

LaLa hugged herself, wondering if it was Bren or Mario who kept it from happening. Were they really that happy? A part of her hoped they were unhappy. Yes, she'd feel she was in good company if Bren felt like she did.

Funny, LaLa felt better about her own life when she knew someone like Bren wasn't more successful than her.

  2. It is human nature to compare but we have to admire not envy I have learned.

  3. Although she was in a new house, with a doctor, Lala felt 'left out', unhappy, wishing others might feel like she does. Well, these are hardly positive feelings.

  4. Human nature I think to kind of want someone else to be unhappy too. I mean, we feel bad for feeling that way, but I'm sure we've allhad those thoughts occasionally. Nice insight into LaLa.

  6. LaLa returns! And as the wife of a doctor no less. It's interesting that she secretly wishes that Bren is unhappy, especially because LaLa admits that she herself has a better situation. At least on the surface. Which makes me wonder if maybe LaLa isn't happy either. Not just about not having close friends, but maybe about her marriage too. Nice twist! πŸ’πŸ‘πŸ’–πŸ€·‍♀️πŸ’πŸ‘πŸ’–πŸ€·‍♀️
