Rox knew Jade was hoping Nonnie would be there just from that look on her face.
"Sorry, she's running late," Rox shrugged and welcomed her to the fresh lemonade at their place (Rox and Pan's studio apartment). They were going to hang out while the boys were playing basketball in this heavy humidity. She didn't know why they were doing it. It was so hot, but then they didn't know any better. Evidently.
Rox sighed with a glass of cold lemonade wondering if she could ever be that friend Jade needed. Probably not, it was enough being Nonnie's bestie.
"What's got you so upset?" Rox went on to say. "Is it work?"
"It's fine," but she was straight-lipped and Rox doubted Jade would want to help with the puzzle on the coffee table where they never had coffee. Yes, she could bring up something Seinfeld-like, but she knew Jade would find no humor in talking nonsense.
They plopped on the couch. Rox said she couldn't believe it was already August. Where had the summer gone? Still, not a word from Jade.
"You and Ari OK?" Rox looked at her blankly, but Jade was being cold.
"I..well, we're fine." Jade nodded. She looked summer fresh as usual. Finally, she let slip how she was still mad at herself about last summer. Yes, she'd been smitten with Tristan. But Rox could tell Jade knew she'd said too much.
"Don't you think Ari looks like Tristan?" Rox said out of the blue and then sipped her lemonade as if she'd said too much too.
Of course, Jade gave her a wild HOW COULD YOU SAY THAT glare. She sipped her cold lemonade too.
Rox practically choked on her lemonade, but she smiled as she went on with her observation. "Just think about it. They do look so much alike...." she paused. "Except." Rox winced with a smile. "Ari is just a happier version, that's all."
Jade kept staring at her as if Rox was either an idiot or a complete genius.
"Think about it," Rox told her that Tristan was so serious. Did he ever smile? Really? "Ari is so sweet on you. I envy you so much. I never get a compliment from Pan. I might as well live with cave boy. I am amazed he grunts sometimes." Oh, she laughed it off. Yes, leave it to her to open up a new wound that might scar Jade for life.
Jade only sighed as if Rox gave her a lot to think about.

ReplyDeleteLove the cold lemonade. I had to laugh about "cave boy"! Rox is trying so hard in this conversation. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday!
Hola!! Tengo que ponerme al día con la historia, pero sin duda tienes una gran habilidad. Ese Rox quiere hacer la conversa jajaj
ReplyDeleteGenial fragmento. Siempre una limonada fria aclara las ideas. Te mando un beso.

ReplyDeleteinteresting dialogues......
ReplyDeleteSo Jade's still carrying a torch for Tristan. I can't say I'm surprised. What did surprise me was Rox's observation that Ari is just a happier Tristan. She's wise, that Rox. And maybe Jade is too for going with the more well-adjusted suitor. Of course, when Rox said this, I cracked up:
ReplyDelete"I envy you so much. I never get a compliment from Pan. I might as well live with cave boy."
Cave boy -- that's our Pan! 🤣🤣🤣
That's so awful about your coworker's friend. Getting such a severe and strange (non-lung-related) form of COVID, especially after not being vaccinated, sounds terrifying. I hope that this person (and everyone else in this boat) has a speedy recovery.
OK, so I came up with this Ari & Tristan notion when I found a pic that I just knew was Tristan, but then realized later it was actually the other actor. Although, I kept it as a Tristan pic which was a funny picture by the way.
